Chick Magnet | by Kurt Ulmer March 11, 2012 | Free! | 1583 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I have one grandfather who was a builder. My other grandfather was a stonemason and my father was a traditional blacksmith. Both my grandmothers had cooked for a living, one in a hotel and the other for well-to-do people. A career in construction or perhaps engineering or catering would have been obvious choices. Instead, I spent 20 years in business and in mid life retrained myself. I chose to work with my hands as my father and grandparents had. I become a renowned woodcraftsman and founded with my wife an art and craft gallery in a Tasmanian tourist town. After 20 years there, we followed our children to mainland Australia to retire on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula. I took up writing seriously in 2003. Working with their hands, creating and shaping materials has occupied my forebear. From stone, to iron, to wood. Now I spend my time putting pen to paper. The medium is getting softer. |

Sista uppsättningen | by Mats Hansson March 09, 2012 | Free! | 4733 words | Read a sample |

Deux Semaines (Two Weeks) | by Jeffrey Miska March 08, 2012 | Free! | 20020 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Jeffrey Miska grew up Western Springs and later moved to Lagrange Illinois. A proud alumni from Lyons Township Highschool class of '79. Music was always his passion. He has played piano since age three and enjoys composing music in his free time. Jeff has also been a member of many local bands over the years as a keyboard and vocal artist. Although not actively performing, he continues to include music as a continuous part of his life. European and American military history have been a life long interest. Reading books about the history of local place names, it sparked further curiosity that led to research on ancient cultures and mythology. He spent several years being mentored in native american religion and culture, and spoke at grammar schools in Dupage county to educate children in native american and local history as well as local archaeology. Further study into his own Slavic and Belgian roots, from pre-christian culture to present day, set the stage for writing unique fiction with accurate historical references. Relatively new to writing other than short stories, his goal in creating short stories and books is to write and share in the spirit of any story teller. To entertain by narrating the simplest of human joys and express that which we treasure in our lives. If there is a message from the author in these books, it's to remind the reader how romance and friendship remain our greatest gift, and how anyone can initiate the greatest of changes with the smallest of actions. Jeff has been employed in the financial industry for most of his adult life and still resides in the Chicago suburbs. |

I Can Do This | by James Hampton March 07, 2012 | Free! | 2774 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: So who is this guy? First, I'm someone who, over the years, has found himself thrilled, shocked, moved, unnerved, startled, intrigued, baffled, and swept away by a variety of stories from all corners of the human imagination; stories that reached me in nearly every form—books, movies, the spoken word—a story can take. What did my favorite works all have in common? Not a thing, other than that a person took his or her love of language and used it to make a world so astounding I had to visit it again and again. Second, I'm someone who enjoyed my trips to these worlds so much that, after awhile, I decided to try creating a few of my own. Since 2007 I have managed to generate an average of one novel or novella-length story each year, as well as a handful of short stories to accompany them, which I hope to make available here really soon. Finally, I'm someone who loves to be amazed. Aren't we all? And the best way I've found to stay in perpetual amazement is to always keep learning, exploring, listening, and searching. You'll never grow old, at least not in your mind, so long as you're greedy for new knowledge and experiences. Deep thoughts from a man who uses a piece of cake for his profile picture. |

The Fifth Child | by Shirl Solomon March 07, 2012 | $2.99 | 71511 words | Sample 20% |
| Author bio: I was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After studying in Mexico, I spent the next few years traveling around the world with my art equipment. I lived with the natives in Tahiti, the Canary Islands, Spain, Italy, Greece and Israel, dividing my time between painting and studying the language. A painting companion in Tahiti was Paul Gaugain’s son,. Alas, his work did not compare with his father’s. During my stint as sketch artist for NBC, I rendered the sketch of Howard Hughes as described by the two pilots who last saw him alive while flying him from Mexico to Texas. This sketch was shown in newspapers around the world. I began to write while my children were in their teens, during which time I earned a living as a handwriting analyst. My first published book was “How to Really Know Yourself Through Your Handwriting. Other books on handwriting followed, then novels and stage and screenplays. My screenplay “J’adoube†won the 1990 Florida Screenwriter’s Award and I was off to Hollywood. I have just retired a handwriting analyst, though I continue to act as a consultant. I reside in Palm Springs, Florida with my little Sophie. She’s a dog. |

Regret In Triptych | by Chris Wesley March 02, 2012 | $0.99 | 19153 words | Sample 15% |
| Author bio: Chris Wesley was eight years old, the first time he caught the attention of a crowd with his storytelling. Seven children stood captivated as Chris told of the time when the family’s pet Doberman Pinscher became engaged in a horrendous fight with his father, ending with his dad killing the dog with a knife. It was fifteen minutes long and a lie. But then, fiction is like that. Since that day, Chris has written music reviews and a music business column for Night Moves Magazine, acted in independent movies and plays; wrote, cast, directed, shot and edited an independent short movie, started bands and gone solo. He plays a few instruments and has generally been what some politely call “a wise guyâ€. That means he says things, he probably should have kept to himself. He does this often. But then, smart asses are like that. He is the creator of The Wilderness, a transmedia storyworld where artists, businesses and technology face off in a new frontier of ever changing paths to success every bit as dangerous and unpredictable as the wilds first traversed by early American settlers. In it, he gets to write fiction, say things he shouldn’t, create visual art and record music that pop radio would likely crap on if given the chance. He has fun with this. But then, independents are like that. |
