Germany was colder than Jack had thought it would be at this time of year. The truck they were bumping down the road in had the back firmly closed, but that didn’t stop him from feeling the iciness of the wind passing through the material that was tied over the back to hide them from prying eyes.

“This is a bit more dangerous than we were told that it would be.”

“We know this, but there is no choice. Our spies tell us that the man will only be there for the next week before he moves on to the next test site.”

That was not good. Their target was part of an experimental tank program that was rumored would change the war in Germany’s favor if the man was successful in creating a working prototype. Jack and Sam’s job was to get to him before he disappeared to the next secret test site.

“That might be true, but your men didn’t mention anything to our side about him being at a base full of German paratroopers. How are we supposed to get a shot on this guy if we have to dodge them all the time?”

Their contact went silent. He knew as well as they did that this was going to be as close to suicide as one could get.

Sam put his finger on the map.

“We can’t be sure what we are going to face, so we are going to have to go through the woods.”

He drew a line to the camp with his index finger.

“At least if we come in this way, rather than get dropped in near the factory your people have ready, we will have the chance to pull out if it gets too hot.”

The spy wasn’t too impressed with that. He would have put a lot of time into securing that shooting site.

“Listen. I understand your feelings, but we are professionals. We will get this done. You just need to trust us, ok,” Jack said to appease the man’s feelings a bit.

“Just don’t let this chance go to waste. This man is important to our cause.”

Jack nodded and put his hand on his Enfield.

“Trust me. We won’t.”

The woods turned out to be jam packed with patrols. Sam and Jack crouched in some underbrush watching the Germans go about their business in the trees around them.

“This is getting out of hand. We should pull out.”

Jack nodded. He knew that they wouldn’t last very long if the Germans found them; however, the way that the Germans were moving around indicated that they were not searching for anyone. They were probably doing some training.

“I don’t think we are going to be able to go back the way we came. We’ll have to continue towards the base right now and see what we can do from there.”
