Toy Car Dialectic
Terry Hayman
When he was seven, Boris Sapersky wanted a Hot Wheels set that had lots of track, a loop-de-loop piece, and a way to make his Hot Wheels cars jump.
It satisfied his need, his mother and father believed, to experiment with spacial geometries and classic Newtonian physics – specifically the principles of speed, inertia, and the dispersion of energy when objects collide.
By the time he was nine, he had graduated to powered, remote controlled units, which usually had oversized wheels, penis-envy designs in lime green and fantasy purple, and could be taken outside to jump medium-sized muddy ditches with a properly-built jump and long enough run-up. His father decided this probably indicated a future in rocket science or at least mechanical engineering. Boris’s mother, who had sunk into a pattern of depression and extramarital affairs, figured it meant Boris was gay or emotionally retarded.
