Driven to Distraction
The day showed no signs of relinquishing its summer blaze as the latter afternoon came into being. I had checked my diary and noticed an appointment at 4:30 to which I had to keep some miles away on the better side of town. My business was Driving Instruction of which I was the principal. I also employed eight full-time instructors, though I would have to seriously start to think about laying-off a couple or more since patronage had not been good for several months. The times in the late sixties were those of great change and competition was keen.
My appointment was to teach a young lady whose car had been a gift to her by her father for completing university. And for those patrons wishing to learn the art of driving in their own machine, I made a point of personally keeping the appointment for several reasons, though mainly because of harsh insurance clauses which could put my employees at risk. Therefore, I opted to take on that responsibility in order to gain control and minimise the risks.
I took one of the company cars and made my way across town to my appointment, diving with the windows wound down. There was no air conditioning and I all but melded to the plastic seats. The steering wheel was so hot that I had to steer with my fingertips for the first few miles. I made the best of the uncomfortable predicament by enjoying the ride on the outskirts of the town through avenues of mature birch and willow, affording grateful fleeting pockets of shade as I passed under, the dappled sunlight faltering as the coolness of the trees took its place. I was in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up. I leaned my elbow on the lowered window and enjoyed the breeze as it played on my skin, buffeting my face as the car sped along. I was feeling good.
