Quite Extraordinary
The most extraordinary thing happened to me some years ago during the intermission of "A Voyage round my Father". I had seen the play before and had gone with a small group of friends one evening, more out of a social obligation than anything, to the Old Vic off Waterloo Road. The theatre is always worth another visit. A typical relic of the 30's: musty thick carpets; lots of unpolished brass against faded hanging drapes; the smell of embedded cigar smoke from the years when enjoyment was not so regulated.
Anyway, at the end of the second Act I volunteered to get the drinks during the interval. There was a crush at the bar, a sort of horseshoe-shaped affair supporting a heavy, redwood top with deep rounded curves, and was trying to make my bid along with everyone else. I was standing at one end of the U next to a rather charming blonde lady who appeared to be looking anxious while fiddling with something at the end of a necklace. I dare say she was trying to draw the barmen's attention as was the rest of us and I thought I might intervene on her behalf if only attention could be arrested.
After a little time, the barman appeared to give our quarter the floor at which the lady was about to raise her hand to draw his attention when she let out a "Oh no,..no!" What I could make out was she had caught a thumb or finger on the necklace, which had caused it to slip it's pendant or whatever she was playing with; the trinket had come away and disappeared down the clef of her ample but well-rounded bosom.
