Snookered!
I lay under the billiard table on my back grappling with a mesh of cables, identifying each from my labelling methodology I had adapted prior. I rested on the blessed castor-wheeled trolley I had borrowed from a friend that made life easier for me - it was similar to those used by car mechanics for sliding around under the bellies of vehicles. The use I made of it lightened my task because I could slide from one end of the underside of the billiard table to the other in relative ease. I now rested my head back to survey my work thus far.
I gazed around the large room. The paneled mahogany gave way to three huge bay windows dressed in heavy velvet drapes; a leather Chesterfield graced one end of the room while a wet-bar of intricate wood carvings took up most of that wall aligned with a rack of cues; occasional Queen Anne chairs made up the rest of the furniture, scattered around in no particular array.
The parquet floor added to the dimness of the room, highlighted by several large pictures of hunting scenes, spot lit by brass lamps. The late afternoon hue from a recent rain shower outside added to the diffuseness of light in the room. I reached for my wandering lamp, switched it on, hung from a convenient hook under the table and returned to my work, reflecting how I had come across this contract.
My bid had been won on a good design. My client, a prominent Cabinet Minister wanted to be able to control the raising and lowering of the light canopy, the dimming of lights and setting of air conditioning and audio/video all from a control panel set into the side of the billiard table.
