Latin Love
About a couple of months or so ago I was relaxing and listening to Latin music on the stereo while arbitrarily scanning the local rag, not really taking anything in when I spied an ad for dancing lessons. A professional dance instructor, fully qualified in such, touted it as a new outlet for Latin American cultural dance inspired and run.
I lingered over the ad thinking it might be a good idea to brush up on my knowledge of both the music and culture, picked up the phone and made an appointment via what sounded like an older ladies' voice the other end of the line. I couldn't imagine being instructed by an old duck from the Women's Institute and my enthusiasm faded somewhat as I half-heartedly agreed to tomorrow at 19:30.
The address I was given turned out to be a Federation house sporting an overgrown garden dotted with untended, rather ancient citrus trees, a couple of porcelain bird-fonts and a disused water feature encrusted with algae. Rather hesitantly, I rang the bell on a door emblazoned with stained-glass frames of vines and waited for conformation of the visual image I had formed of my instructor. To my great surprise, a stunning honey-blonde lady of obvious elegance and bearing answered the door.
Her blue eyes were those rare assets - full of warmth, enquiring. After an inevitable pause, she verified who I was and interpreted what must have been a look of astonishment from me by explaining that her mother had answered the phone to take the booking. Thank the universal gods for that I thought as she closed the door and ushered me into the dimly lit hall. She continued to explain about her mother.
