It was a beautiful springtime day. The birds were chirping happily and the bunnies were hippity-hopping. But, it was down below in the cold flowing mountain stream where this story really begins. There, a newborn baby bear cub named, Precious was enjoying her first fishing lesson with her mother.

Mommy! Mommy!” squealed the cub hopping up and down on a boulder. “Watch me catch a wiggly!”

But… instead of catching something, Precious slipped, sailing headfirst into the icy-cold stream.

Popping to the surface she laughed. “I didn’t catch the big wiggly, Mommy, but I catched this little one. See!”

“The big one that got away is called a fish, Precious, and the little one on your paw is a minnow,” explained her mother.

Eat him quickly, he may be tiny, but he’s still food for us… and we must eat everything we catch to prepare ourselves for our long winter nap.”

Precious obeyed bringing the minnow up to her mouth. Suddenly the squirmy little fellow flip-flopped and dove back into the stream.

Precious waved bye-bye to him as he swam away.

It was late afternoon when suddenly…“Swoosh!” …Precious’ paw sliced through the water with tremendous speed tossing a large rainbow trout onto the shore.

Mommy, Mommy! I did it! I did it! I catched a wiggly all by myself!”

Yes, you most certainly did!” replied her mother. “And I’m very proud of you.’

“Now I won’t have to worry about you ever going hungry. You can catch fishes any time you want to, can’t you?”
