Zoe

Henry was sitting in the campus library of a local university. As Henry skimmed through a book about the mystery of sexual stamina, he periodically glanced over his shoulder at Zoe, a 21-year-old college student, who was sitting at another table chin deep in books. Zoe appeared to be of some sort of Middle Eastern descent, though he couldn't be sure. She was short and skinny, with shoulder length straight black hair with a maroon tinge and wore glasses. Her clothes were close to her form, and different shades of brown, including a dark brown leather jacket, which she couldn't decide if she needed or not, as she would don it every time the AC kicked on and off again every time it kicked off. About an hour into watching Zoe, Henry noticed a girl with similar ethnic traits join, leave, and then rejoin her. While Zoe seemed very learned and no-nonsense, the second girl seemed the opposite, seemingly trying to coax Zoe away from her books, judging from their opposing tones, as they prattled on and on in some foreign speak.

As Henry sat there, now approaching the start of the third hour, he wiped his dampened forehead with the sleeve of his button-down shirt and pulled out his lead sheet for the sixth or seventh time. He methodically unfolded it and placed it over the pages in his book and read it through, as if hoping more information about Zoe would magically appear. All he had was her name, age, occupation, American address, and a picture.

Henry was starting to doze off when he suddenly realized Zoe and her friend, who finally convinced her to leave, were on the move. Henry waited for Zoe to whittle her books down to a single stack and then check them out at the desk, before he got up to follow her. Henry stepped into the early evening air and spotted Zoe and her friend and started after them, trying quite clumsily to maintain some sort of anonymity.

As Henry walked along the vast network of campus sidewalks, he was suddenly startled by a familiar voice. He glanced to his side and discovered Daphne.

"Hello," Daphne blurted out. Daphne was in a blue university sweatshirt and jeans. She was wearing very little makeup and had her hair in a ponytail, all in tune with a typical college student, complete with a book bag over her shoulder.

"Hi," Henry said with a hush. "Am I in some sort of trouble?"

"Oh no. No trouble at all," Daphne said.

Henry nodded.

"I've been observing you for the last few hours. Let's see. So far you've followed Zoe from her dorm to her psych class. From her psych class to the library. And now, here we are following her back to her dorm."

Henry nodded again.

"Is this normal behavior?"

"I guess not."

"It's normal if you wanna create the illusion that you are a total psychopath."

"So, I am in trouble," Henry said, annoyed.

"No. No trouble at all." Daphne smiled and put her arm around his. "It's plain, you might need a little assistance. Nothing wrong with that. And so, here I am."

"Thanks," Henry said.

"Not a problem."

Daphne suddenly quickened the pace, almost dragging Henry with her as they made it to Zoe's dormitory building. Zoe and her friend stopped to have a smoke. Daphne continued inside, pulling Henry in after her, as if he was intent on standing there and watch Zoe smoke.
