Sex on the beach?” the young man asks matter-of-factly behind the counter.

She looks behind her back and blinks twice at the bartender.

“Tempting,” Ellen wants to reply to him.

Vodka, peach schnapps, orange and cranberry juice,” he says again.

Her face lit up.

Oh well I think the drink will do for now.”

A sarcastic smile stretches on her lips. The bartender glances back at her without a smile and starts making the cocktail. He finally presents the drink in front of her.

There’re always so friendly in the Mercantile. Then again it isn’t called the Mercantile for nothing.

She peers out. Outside Dame Street is a car park. She turns her attention back to Virgil, her brother second best’s friend.

Where were we?” he asks. There is a twinkle in his eye. He has heard everything.

You are funny,” he says at last.

From all compliments she ever received, this is the only one she has always accepted as face value.

Thanks,” she says looking straight at him. She smiles and he seems momentarily speechless. She laughs feeling free and alive.

It is strange, she thinks. I feel so confident. It is been so long since I have felt this way.

Usually only drink does this to her but she isn’t drunk. Far from it. She only had one drink so what’s happening to her?

She glances at Virgil. He seems ill at ease.

And suddenly it hit her.

Of course. Look at him. And she does again. His hay-coloured hair, his light-pale skin, his slender figure, he could play the part very well. And to top it all he is looking into her face as if she was the Sun reincarnated. He brings her drink forward.

You are dazzling him. How come you haven’t noticed it yet?

You have, adds another part of her. But you were not interested remember? You made it very clear at the beginning that all you wanted was friendship.

She frowns.

How long has it been since you haven’t kissed someone?

Too long.

She sighs deeply. He looks her way.

And you better keep it this way. She focuses her attention back on him.

So is it true?” she asks to distract him.

What is?” he replies puzzled.

“…That men decide to have sex with a woman within eight seconds?”

Virgil’s face blanks and then he bursts into a hearty laugh.

That’s what I call being thrown off your horse!”

“So is it?” she asks again almost aggressively.

But he doesn’t seem to take notice.

Make it more like two seconds!” he says lightly.

That’s not flattering,”

Her reply has come sharp and blunter than she expected.

What are you doing? Are you trying to anger him?

She shakes her head but Virgil seems determined to ignore her sudden burst of anger.

“For whom it isn’t flattering?” he asks.

For neither. That means we women are just meat and what does it say about men’s intellect? It’s impossible to assess someone in such little time unless men are all dullards?” she asks with sparkles in her eyes.

But her comments are not fazing him.

Eight seconds is plenty of time to assess someone! I admit men are easier to please. I know women are different. They don’t make a decision on looks only.”

You know what you are trying to do? Adds her inner voice. You are trying to push him away.

So?

She smiles slowly. Apparently she needs to be tougher. He is smart and witty. He can take it. He looks at her with a serious look for him. His intelligent dark eyes are piercing her. Her heart starts to race. She looks down.

I am surprised Ellie,” he says softly.

At what?”

She casually readjusts her dress.

You sound annoyed at the statement. Surely, you know how men are,” he ventures.

I do,” she declares. She looks straight back at him. And confidently she crosses one leg over the next. His eyes follow her movement and for the first time she watches it with a secret pleasure.

You don’t need to be aggressive. You are in control.

But every man is different, right?” she says as if she had had many.

His eyebrows furrow. Virgil simply smiles and for a few seconds, he concentrates his attention back on his drink. Ellen knows why.

Hurt pride.

She suddenly has the urge to reach out to him.

I wonder if… Stop that, she admonishes herself, you can’t pat him. It’ll just confuse the hell out of him. You told him you were not interested.

She takes in his high cheeks. His full lips have thinned.

You know what? You want him now because you know you can’t have him. Damn it!

Try another approach.

According to the same survey, men wouldn’t hesitate a second if given the opportunity.”

That’s incorrect,” Virgil exclaims.

His answer momentarily surprises her but soon she regains her senses.

Surely, no men would refuse a woman. They would all feel flattered especially if that woman said oh, I don’t know, “I want you!”

As she says the last three words, she looks straight in his eyes. For a second, he looks at her transfixed by the intensity in her gaze but then, he shakes himself as if realising at last that her speech isn’t addressed at him.

Personally I wouldn’t,” he says with a hint of sadness in his voice. “If I have only known her for a short time, I wouldn’t feel flattered at all. It doesn’t say much about her.”

I don’t believe you! Surely you would be at least surprised?” she says again.

All she wants suddenly is to test this theory on him. How would he react to such advance? The pit of her stomach suddenly goes warm at the idea. However, she doesn’t make a move.

A few years ago, if this happened to me, I would jump on it, but now, I wouldn’t.” He tilts his head which she finds impossibly charming. “Now I’d prefer to be with someone I know well.”

Wow Virgil, she thinks, stop this. Don’t tease me. She has been so blind about him. Oh how she so wishes to kiss him now.

You stupid stupid girl. What if he turns you down? What if he thinks forward women are a turn-off?

He continues:

I want to enjoy being with someone I know.” He pauses. “And how can I make her happy in all areas unless I know her well?”

Oh, the devil, she thinks, how so very tempting.

Okay one last test.

In all areas, huh? To me, that just means you want to be in control all the time,” she says smug.

No, I will just feel more at ease with her, that’s all.”

Suddenly she wants to feel his lips on hers and his hands on her hips and see how he means it.

Calm the hell down, he is not ready for this! Hell you are not ready for this!

Feel at ease with her?” she snorts. “Smart answer! But it’s a shame really,” she adds taking another sip at her drink. “You would think that men like you have seen it all.”

What do you mean?” He imitates her gesture taking a sip at his own drink.

Wait, wait for it…Let him have his drink, she thought.

Well…” she begins. She gives a glance at him. She has now his full attention.

I really doubt …,” she continues playing with her glass seductively. He looks at her hands.

This might come to you as a surprise, she warns him mentally. She stares at him noticing how he seems to drink her every word.

“…you wouldn’t be flattered if I did this!” As she speaks, she raises one hand and reaches for his neck. Her lips meet his. She deepens her kiss. Then quite unexpectedly she moves back and scans his face. He looks at a complete loss for a second.

Oh you do look surprised!”

She laughs pleased with herself.

He is looking at her in awe, with a beginning of a smile.

I think I’ve proved my case!” she adds confidently.

He leans forward and boldly kisses her back.

“I think you did!”

This time, she glances surprisingly at him before quickly recovering with a smile.

So I am apparently dating again.
