Chapter 1
Taking in a deep breath as I stepped forward; I nod my head politely to the two doormen who pulled the large oak doors open. Revealing the long large wooden table which was occupied by guests and my family; the room was lit by the setting sunshine which filtered through the large open windows.
Silence fell in the room as I strolled towards the table. This did not discourage me, nor did it scare me, the silence would not defeat my confidence. A small smile appeared on my father’s face as he arose from the head of the table. My father is a large man. No, he is not overweight; he has broad shoulders and a solid build; he is powerful- I did not view him as powerful because he was King, no I viewed him as powerful because of his strength. Little hair was left on his head; it had slowly disappeared through the years; his small beard was nicely trimmed. I returned his smile, as the rest of the table arose from their seats; none dared stay seated, out of respect.
My eyes darted to the empty seat next to my brother; as a servant pulled the chair out for me to take. Liam had a large smile on his face. His green eyes sparkled with happiness as he ran his hand through short brown hair. Liam was well built, his dominant jaw was freshly shaven, to say he was simply viewed as handsome was a belittlement; he was beyond handsome.
My smile faltered as I took in his happy demeanour; if only he knew what this dinner was about, his happiness would then indeed dim. Nodding my head to my father, as he returned to his seat; the rest of the table soon followed. My father beamed with happiness and pride as he looked at me. I swiftly glanced down to the other end of the table, giving my mother a small smile.
My eyes gazed over the six empty seats across from me, my jaw tightened as I thought about the future occupants. Liam’s hand went to mine under the table and gave it a quick squeeze; reassurance flooded my body at the small gesture, and a small smile reappeared on my face.
“White or Red my Royal Highness?” A waiter asked from my left side.
“Red please.”
Low conversation began to return to the room and the tightness in the air began to lift. I let the wall that shielded my thoughts drop so my family could connect to me telepathically. “Finally, I have been dying to speak to you all day! Where have you been hiding?” Liam’s voice boomed in my mind.
“Well one should not wish to eavesdrop in their sisters thoughts all day,” I said as I casually sipped on my red wine. “It’s not like you to hide away or keep secrets from me.” Sighing I pulled my shield back up blocking any further communication. I loathed lying to Liam, though he would understand the cause soon enough for my strange behaviour.
Sending my father a pointed look; as I was sure he had heard mine and Liam’s short conversation. The cracking open of the large oak doors brought myself out of my thoughts; as my eyes shot to the entrance of the dining room.
“King Alpha Griffin, Queen Griffin, Prince Griffin, Princess Griffin and Sir Alexander,” a doorman’s voice announced.
As the family began to make their way towards the table my father again arose from his seat. Instantly the table followed; bringing everyone to their feet once again.
Keeping an eye on the small family as they approached, I stared in amazement. If you didn’t know better; you wouldn’t expect this family to be one of the most powerful royal families in the world. Ours of course challenges them for the title; but that would soon be an issue of the past.
King Griffin was of solid build; his build and posture mirrors my fathers, though King Griffin still has light grey hair on his head and his face was shaven. His eyes shone with determination as he walked towards his seat. Following slightly behind him was his wife Queen Griffin; she was tall but shorter than her husband. Her skin looked like soft velvet, her eyes were diamond in shape and had a magically grey tint; she was a vision of beauty. Princess Sophia followed next. She looked much like her mother, though her hair was long and brown in shade; she could be no older than 16.
The man that travelled behind her made my breathing hitch. He was tall and of muscular build, it was clear that he took pride in his fitness. His facial features were chiselled and his eyes were black, a tint of grey within them; and they were haunting. As he crossed his arms, it only made each muscle that ran along his thick arms more dominant. The man that followed behind Prince Connor seemed to be a guard or a protector. Servants pulled the chairs out and the family took their place at the table.
My eyes locked with Prince Connor’s for a split second, as he took the seat directly across from me; his haunting black eyes shielding his emotions. Greetings were exchanged between the Kings before both took their seats; all guests slowly followed their lead. The waiters began to serve the feast; though I don’t think many would have the stomach for food; as many at the table were consumed with nerves and fear. The only few which were not experiencing these feelings were the Powerful Alpha King’s and of course the Alpha’s sons.
----
Sipping on what could possibly be my sixth glass of wine, I sat back expecting to get a disapproving look from my father but instead I was greeted with a blank expressionless face; it looked as if he was having a debate within himself. I dropped my mental shield and let my families’ voices fill my mind.
“Alice please calm down,” my father reassured my mother.
“How can I calm down when we are dining with the enemy!” My mother’s voice replied with panic.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“Yeah Dad fill Isabella in, she has been too occupied with the wine glass.” Liam snickered.
“Good point Liam, Isabella, perhaps refrain from another refill.” My mother directed.
I crossed my arms and leaned back in my seat; with a displeasing look appearing on my face. I never rat on Liam! That smirk wouldn’t still be in place if mum and dad knew about Annabel sneaking out of Liam’s room in the early hours of this morning! I regretted thinking it as soon as the thought drifted into my head. Immediately Liam choked on his drink, mother dropped her spoon and dad took a deep breath.
Flicking my shield back up in place, and flinging my hand to my forehead; really I should know better! Perhaps the wine was affecting my judgement; I pushed the half full glass of wine away from me, and took interest in the table cloth; ignoring my brothers glares.
“Thanks.” Liam muttered angrily under his breath.
“Should we begin our discussions or is this not a suitable time?” King Alpha Griffin asked.
My eyes scanned the table, it was reasonable to say that our little family scene had not gone unnoticed. I grumbled to myself at the unwanted attention; sighing I glanced at my father, who was displaying a firm expression, “No, it is time for business,” he answered; “everyone excluding royal blood leave the table.”
Seats began to move at the sudden order and tables slowly emptied. Nerves began to raise in my stomach as I realized the time had come; time to tell Liam the truth- and time to put The Kings’ plan in motion. It was surprising to see Sir Alexander stay seated; my father glanced at him but it seemed that he was under the guard of the Griffins so he remained, so he did not question it.
My father did not speak until the oak doors shut firmly, insuring our conversation would remain private. “Isabella, Liam; this is Princess Sophia and Prince Connor,” my father introduced us.
Both Liam and I acknowledged the introduction. Sophia sent has both a tiny smile at the introduction; however Prince Connor remained silent; his face expressionless. Liam narrowed his eyes at Prince Connor’s unfriendliness.
“King Blackmore, I would like to offer the following script.” King Griffin offered handing over a rolled piece of paper, tied with their royal ribbon. My father took the script and began to unroll it, as his eyes gazed over the information he asked, “Princess Isabella, Prince Connor do you understand your commitment within this script?”
“I do.” Prince Connor replied firmly. Shifting in my seat, I remained silent as a few moments passed; I had not read the script nor did I know its contents entirely. All the information I had was what my father had told me. My father lifted his eyes from the script and raised an eyebrow; questioning my silence. Clearing my throat I replied, “I do not understand my commitment within the script, but I understand my commitment and responsibility to my country and to my pack. If the script has my country and my packs best interests in mind, then it is my royal duty to fulfil such commitments.”
Liam shifted uncomfortably in his seat, shooting confused glances in my direction. “May I be as bold to ask what this script is and the meaning of this arrangement?” Liam asked. The table remained silent and I followed by example; until Liam turned his whole body in my direction and took my hand in his. Questions clear within his eyes as he stared at me waiting for me to explain.
Sighing and dropping my gaze; “The script, which will be sealed by the blood of the bounded two, will ensure that the Griffins and Blackmore’s unite, the two royal bloods becoming one. The two packs will be interlinked; the countries and wolves all now meeting the orders under one throne. Once this is completed, both kings will step down; leaving the ruling to only one King and one Queen. This will end all wars between the countries; between the thrones, as we will become one.” My voice echoed through the dining room; I had a feeling that I had also cleared up any questions for Princess Sophia.
“But...” Liam lost himself in thought, his eye brows furrowing as he took in the heavy information. “Only mates can bind.” Liam said confused; “Are you… and Prince..?”
“No.” I quickly cut him off. His jaw tightened, “Then what you are all proposing is impossible.” His fists curled as he began to take control over his temper which was heating up. “They will mate.” King Griffin stated; his sudden outburst brought Liam’s glare in his direction.
“It can be done.” My father spoke up towards Liam. “How would this be?” A soft voice asked. My eyes glanced at Princess Sophia; I couldn’t help by wonder how she had the confidence to address my father.
“Taking the blood from Isabella and Connor while in wolf form; when the two transfer back the blood of the opposite will be injected into their arms. Isabella will then carry Connor’s blood and Connor will carry Isabella’s. As they both have royal blood, this will bind them together. It will result in them becoming mates, thus wiping any original longing or wanting for their previous designed mate.” King Griffin explained to his daughter.
A large fist pounded on the table, which made me jump in fright; “THAT….. THAT… That goes against nature,” Liam roared. “How could you be allowing this!?” My father remained silent as he watched his hot tempered son; not replying to his question.
“And YOU! ISABELLA! Why are you agreeing to this!?” Liam turned his temper to me; I sighed as I watched his face become red with anger.
“Do not speak to her like that!” My mother yelled, now entering the argument.
I let my aura of calmness leave my body, letting it fill the room. The mood in the room changed immediately. The ability to calm and relax others was my skill and power. Some would say that it was useless, but I enjoyed being able to relax a person by a simple touch; also knowing how to de-stress a situation has been more than useful; especially with a hot headed father and brother.
“It was originally planned for yourself and Sophia to be undertaking the script.” My father admitted. Shocked filled Liam’s face as he shifted his weight on his chair; dropping the fork he had bent into pieces, under the force of his fist. “I knew it wasn’t possible for you to go through with it Liam.” I said calmly.
“I know that you and Annabel have mated. Though why you wish to hide this fact is beyond me Liam. I didn’t think it fair for you to be placed in a situation to choose your country and pack over your mate. Not to mention the chances of the process working would be decreased. After all we only have until my birthday to complete the process. Once I am 18 I will be able to find my mate and then the script will become life threatening if undertaken.”
Liam sat lifeless in his chair and let his glare drop to his hands. I felt sadness dwell within me as I watched has his face began to mirror disgust and dislike.
“So you’re the reason.” A cold husky voice entered the air.
I turned to face Connor, it was perhaps only the second sentence I had ever heard from his lips and how offended the small sentence had been. Crossing my arms and leaning back into my chair; as my eyes narrowed. “No one had a gun to your head Prince.”
His dark eyes glared into mine; “My duty to my country, comes before self-choice.”
I broke all eye contact with him; letting my eyes drift to the table cloth. How those words echoed in my mind; because those same words left my mouth when my father addressed this proposal with me. My father left me with no choice; I had to do the right thing for my brother and for the throne.
The country came first, the pack came first and the throne came first. These were the three firsts. They run through the royal blood; ensuring that we uphold them at all cost. “Then it is settled, the script will be taken out before Isabella turns 18.” King Griffin advised.
My father nodded in agreement as he arose from his chair, as he replied back to King Griffin; “Much preparation will be needed and many areas to be addressed.” He extended his hand out to King Griffin; sealing mine and Connor’s fate. King Griffin extended his hand and took my father’s hand. My eyes relocked with Connors; his eyes mirroring mine, our fate has been sealed.
We are royally screwed.
Chapter 2
How much heart ache can a heart take before it breaks?
Two weeks had passed since the dinner. The dinner which aired the Alpha’s plans, which as a result had ended all communication between myself and my brother. It had been two painful weeks of silence; our once unbreakable relationship was now shattered.
Only a few words which had been shared between us, was a small hello and pass the salt. All my attempts to restore our relationship had failed; with his mental shield fighting away any chance I had to talk to him telepathically. The only conclusion that I could draw from his actions, was that he was still disgusted with me.
Though the only small comfort I could take; was that he was also ignoring my parents. Which as selfish as it sounds gave me a little hope that in time our relationship could be patched back together.
I sighed loudly and fixed the wrinkles in my light blue dress, my mind now turned to this evening’s event- tonight would perhaps topple the dinner.
Which brings my mind back to the question that has been replaying in my mind all night; how much heart ache can a heart take before it breaks? Or should I say how much pain could the heart take that was self-inflicted?
The answer baffled me, though by the end of the night I would be experiencing perhaps a whole new level of heart ache, the sadness washed though my body as I reminded myself of what I was to do tonight.
My eyes drifted from the outside gardens to the picture next to my bedside table. Reaching over and picking it up, I stared at the couple. Lust, happiness and love clear in both pairs of blue eyes.
The way he held his arm protectively around her shoulders, pulling her closer towards him, making any ounce of space non-existent. The smirk on his face would make one think he had robbed a bank and got away with it. The charming, loveable smirk of his; which is one of his trade mark features. Though nothing compared to his piercing blue eyes; those eyes which I could never hide from. The reason that this picture held so much importance was because it was taken on the night that I fell madly in love with my best-friend.
Nick.
*
I stood outside of the castle at the top of the large bluestone steps, waiting; waiting for Nick. I hadn’t seen him in weeks; he had been running boundaries with the defence wolves. I had a strong suspicion that it was under my father’s influence; which angered me, though I could understand his reasoning.
He was trying to make it easier for me to separate from Nick until I… Until I was mated with Prince Connor; a dull ache began to appear in my chest. I still was unsure how I would proceed with the plan, which I had no choice but to undertake.
I nodded my head down to guests that arrived, all here to celebrate Nick’s birthday. Tonight was Nick’s 18th birthday, well to be correct tomorrow was his birthday. But tomorrow my chance to say good bye to him would be lost. I couldn’t be more pleased that his parents organized his party for tonight.
Tonight was it, I only had tonight. The last night with my best friend and boyfriend and just like Cinderella I only had to midnight, because after midnight Nick could mate; and my father feared that I was his mate and sadly so did I.
Not that I could be sure if we were or not; nobody knows until they are 18 years of age. But when you find them you are supposed to feel complete, as if your life had no meaning without them. These were the feelings I had with Nick. My love for him was blinding and the mere thought of us being apart sent sharp pains across my chest.
But I had no choice, the country came first, the throne came first and the pack came first. So I had only one choice and that was to ensure that Nick and I had no contact when he came of age. I couldn’t be near him till I was mated with Prince Connor, even if it was against natures plan. Sadness began to wrap its firm grasp around my heart again.
My thoughts were suddenly interrupted as two hands wrapped around my eyes.
“Guess who?” Asked a sweet husky voice from behind me.
It sent shivers down my spine as the sadness I was feeling seconds before disappeared. My heart beat increased and happiness began to trickle through me. “What reward will I receive if I guess correctly?”
“Depends on the answer my highness”
“Well I would answer my boyfriend…. But seeing as he has disappeared…”
“I am only left with one reaction... and that is to RUN!?” Pulling my elbow out and connecting it with his chest, not hard enough to cause pain; just enough to drop his hands from eyes.
I automatically ran down the bluestone steps, with my dress whipping around my ankles. Before I could take the last step and then be free to run to the gardens, I felt myself being lifted off the ground by two muscular arms and being carried.
“Didn’t your boyfriend tell you to never run from your attackers?” I heard the smugness in his voice; “No, perhaps I should get a new one?”
We twirled around the corner of the large bluestones steps, breaking away from all the guests. He spun my body around and before I could say another word, my back landed softly on the green fresh grass.
Nick hovered over me, his arm firmly around my waist and the other next to my head, holding himself above me. My eyes locked with his dashing crystal blue ones and like always a feeling of completeness ran though my veins. “Perhaps,” he softly said; before his lips continued with mine.
Just like all the kisses before, it was gentle and filling. His mouth on mine made my blood rush, my heart beat increase and my body crave for his. He pulled apart and rested his forehead on mine.
“I’ve missed you Is.”
“I’ve missed you.”
The three words however did not successfully describe the feeling I had when he was away though.
*
My hand intertwined with his hand as we walked up the large bluestone steps. “So how have you been Isabella?” A small smile appeared in my lips; “I have been well, been working on my paintings.”
“Did you learn from the defence run?” I asked as we reached the top of the stairs, instantly the large group of guests parted, “Your highness,” the large crowd said clearly.
Nick straightened up, and I nodded my head in acknowledgement to the crowd. Walking through the large opened gates into the castle; guests continued to part. I pulled my eyes away from the crowds and glanced up at the dashing Nick.
He took my breath away; his trade mark smirk began to appear on his lips as if he knew the effect; he leaned down and whispered in my ear, “Your breathtaking Isabella.”
I blushed and pulled my eyes from him, now staring in front of us as we entered the courtyard.
The trees framing the pathway had blue fairy lights intertwined with the branches; the beds of flowers had tiny white lights lying around them. The waterfall in the middle of the court yard had multiple colours flashing through it.
One could easily state that no expense had been spared. “The committee has done an amazing job!” I stated while breaking mine and Nick’s hands, so I was able to thread my arm though his.
“NICK!” A squeal came from across the courtyard.
A darting figure began to approach at light speed.
“OH NICK! I have missed you so much!” A light headed Lucy said.
Nick and I broke apart as Nick embraced Lucy in a loving way.
Lucy was Nick’s cousin, she was a charming person; though she has never directly spoken to me, this was a common problem among our pack. My royal status interfered with how our people spoke to me.
Lucy’s eyes opened and she suddenly realized I was here; her chocolate eyes widened in fright. I smiled sweetly from behind Nick. Her mouth began to open but I quietly spoke to hopefully brush over her embarrassment.
“Nick, I will meet you in the ballroom; lovely to see you again Lucy.” I smiled and turned my back quickly and walked gracefully to the end of the courtyard and entering through the halls heading towards the ballroom.
The music drifted through the hall and with each step I took the music began to get louder. The ballroom doors were wide open. Just like the courtyard; the ballroom was decorated with the aim to take ones breath away.
I glanced over the large tables of people talking and drinking, then across the dance floor which was filled with happy faces. My eyes made their way up to the balcony, which had one very large table; occupied by my parents, the elders and of course the Griffins.
I nodded my head to my father, he tipped his slowly down. We had a very clear understanding that Nick and I would break up in my own terms tonight. He was at no point to interfere.
Placing Nick’s present among the many on the table, I knew as soon as he opened it he would know it was from me. This brought a smile to my lips as a hand gently placed itself in mine.
I turned my head to the side and my eyes reconnected with Nick’s. He once again made my heart skip a beat.
“Dance with me?” Nick asked while pulling my hand towards the dance floor.
I followed in step, Mariana Trench; Good To You began to fill the air. I loved this song.
A smile played on my lips as Nick wrapped his arm around my waist and the other held my hand tight in his. I placed my hand on his shoulder and left no room in between us.
His crystal blue eyes stared down into mine and I felt complete with his touch.
His trademark smirk began to make an appearance.
“Missed me Is?” He asked softly.
I pulled my eyes away from his and leaned my head onto his chest, I felt his grip around my waist tighten.
“You could say that.” I mumbled. But I knew that I would miss him a lot more and I soon would know just how much it would hurt. “Is everything ok?”
“Yes, why wouldn’t it be? You’re back.”
“Got that right babe; nothing happened here while I’ve been gone?” He asked with an underlying motive in his tone. As our continued bodies swayed to the music, I pulled away from his chest and met his stare.
“What do you mean?”
“Just making sure everything is ok. Plus that dick Griffin keeps giving me dirty looks and is glaring at you.” He turned his head to the side to glance up at the balcony. I glanced up towards the balcony also; as my eyes connected with Prince Connor’s a look of pure hate covered his features and his eyes were cold and black as always.
I broke my stare and let my eyes drift back to Nick; I could not understand Connor’s anger nor did I want to waste time thinking about it. I wanted every second that I could have to be focused on Nick.
“No one can understand a twisted mind like his, much less justify his actions.” Turning my full attention back to Nick, “True sweetie.”
“The real question is though, what did I get for my birthday!” He asked, trying to end any serious conversation.
A full smiled spread across my face, “Well I am sure you will know when you come across it.”
“What you hid it?”
“No.”
“You’re lying.”
“I am not.”
“You are, your heart is racing, it’s giving you away.”
“My heart doesn’t race when I lie.”
“It does Isabella.”
“No it doesn’t Nick.”
“Does.”
“I am not lying, I placed your present on the table.”
“I know you well enough to know you wouldn’t let me off that easy.”
“Well I guess you will have to wait and see then,” I teased.
He spun me around as the music picked up in beat. I laughed sweetly as he pulled me back into his arms. “You’re being mean. I’m the birthday boy after all!”
“I must have missed the memo...”
His eyes narrowed playfully and a smirk spread across his lips. As he pulled his hand away from mine, he placed it gently to the left side of my face, framing it. My heart beat increased as he lowered his face down to mine.
I closed my eyes as his lips brushed against mine, a feeling of excitement raced through my blood. He was about to pull away as I pulled both my hands away from his body and entangled them in his hair.
I felt his lips twist up in a smile as I deepened the kiss, which he didn’t try to deny. The taste of his mouth burnt a fire of desire in my whole body. I had to control myself from ripping his clothes off.
I ignored all reason as my hands moved to the back of his neck.
I wanted him.
I needed him.
Stuff my royal commitment, my wolf and I wanted one thing and that was to mate with Nick; the clearing of the throat broke Nick’s lips from mine. I let out a low growl.
Who dared to interrupt us!
Nick and I both took in a much needed breath. Twisting my face to the side I saw my father was the one that had rudely stopped mine and Nicks kiss; my eyes narrowed.
“May I?” He gestured for my hand.
No you may not I thought to myself. Nick untangled my hands from around his neck and nodded. Snapping my head to my father’s I unhappily took his hand.
His hand wrapped lightly around my waist and I let out an unhappy breath of air. His eyes bored into mine as we began to lightly dance.
I knew that look, he wanted me to open my mind; though I choose to ignore his request. But when he let out a deep growl; I reluctantly let my shield down.
“You are being childish Isabella, your making this harder than needed.”
“You promised you would stay out of this!”
“You were to break it off Isabella not make a passionate scene on the dance floor for everyone to see. You forced my hand.”
Flinching at his tone, as he continued; “Do I need to remind you of your obligations? Your duty to your country, the pack and your family?”
We had stopped pretending to dance now and my eyes were glued to the marble floor, not having enough strength to meet his eyes. “End it Isabella.” With that his hand left my waist and I felt him brush across my shoulder as he left me standing on the floor.
I began to make my way through the dance floor in the opposite direction. Sadness once again took a firm grip around my heart.
*
“There you are!” Nick announced with relief clear in his tone, as he began to walk towards me.
I leaned across the pillar behind me, I had been hiding in the shadows of the courtyard; I had managed to avoid him completely all night, to try and make what was to come next easier. But do you know what I realized about ten minutes ago?
It wasn’t going to shield me nor ease the pain, so I wanted to kick myself for letting my father influence my last night with Nick. There was only 10 minutes left before midnight struck. I forced a small smile on my face, as Nick was within reaching distance. “Sorry.”
Nick’s hands were on the sides of my face before I could even protest. His touch had a magically calming effect on me and I felt my body relax under his touch. I closed my eyes and inhaled his amazing scent.
“Is, what’s wrong?” He pleaded.
My eyes fluttered open and focused on his pure crystal blues ones; those I could not hide from. I opened my mouth but slowly closed it, our eyes holding on to each other’s. I watched the concern flash through his eyes and yet I remained mute.
“I love you Is...”
Then I felt his lips crash onto mine and I met his with just as much force. My hand gripped the back of his neck. His hands left my face only to wrap tightly around my waist pulling me closer into his chest.
“ISABELLA!!” A deep husky voice boomed.
As a reaction Nick took a step away from me breaking all contact; Connor stepped out from the shadows with a murderous look on his face. “What do you want?” Nick snarled.
Connor returned a glare at Nick, but didn’t respond, the sound of two sets of footsteps approaching focused my attention. As the couple began to come out of the shadows I recognized them instantly; it was Sophia and Liam and they ceased walking as the approached.
Before words could be exchanged the sound of the bells marking midnight rang throughout the night air. My eyes widened in fright, I had left it too late; it was now midnight- how could time slip away so quickly. As the last bell chime echoed within the courtyard, I watched in complete terror as Nick’s face changed.
He looked as if his life was now complete. He had found his own sunlight and love flicked through his facial expressions. My breathing slowed as I watched in terror; he had found his mate.
I turned on my heels and ran; I ran through the courtyard, pushing through the crowds in the halls. I ran up the stairs and I didn’t stop running until I slammed my bedroom door locking it firmly behind me.
As I fell to my knees on the ground, my hands wrapped around my stomach trying to hold myself together; my mind trying to process what I had just witnessed. I kept running the scene through my head, over and over.
My Nick.
My childhood friend.
My best friend.
My boyfriend.
And now a new term to describe mine and Nick’s relationship flashed across my mind.
My future brother in law!
And with that I let the tears stream down my face in the darkness of my room.
Chapter 3
Nick was the love of my life.
This was the thought that crossed my mind as I approached my father’s study door. Needing a distraction; I knocked on the door softly and entered quickly, not waiting for permission.
Seating across from my father at our double sided desk; I began to run my fingers over the pile of contracts that would aide as a distraction. My father and I shared a glance with each other and a small smile of pity appeared on his lips as he brought his attention back to the open file he was reading; we always worked in silence and tonight I was ever so grateful that I knew no questions would be asked and no answers had to be given.
Bringing my attention back to the royal contracts in front of me, it was time to get distracted from my own sadness.
*
A firm knock on the study door surprised my father and me; we gave each other a questioning glance as neither of us should be expecting company. I glanced at the clock on the far wall if was half past three in the morning; no one should be disturbing us.
Wonder began to build up in me, who would dare come to the Kings study this late. My father cleared his voice; “Enter.”
The door slowly opened and King Griffin entered, followed by Princess Sophia, Prince Connor and…… my breathing increased.
Nick.
Snapping my eyes back to the contracts in front of me, trying to ignore the fact Nick had his hand wrapped around Sophia’s. “King Griffin,” my father stated as he straightened himself in his seat.
I heard King Griffin move closer to my father’s desk; “I apologize for the lateness of our visit.” Glancing up from my work and noticing the closeness of Nick and Sophia once again; heartache began to squeeze at my heart.
Why must they be here, couldn’t they leave; “It would indeed need to be important.” My father warned, letting my eyes glance at King Griffin as he narrowed his eyes at my father. “My daughter has mated.”
My father glanced at me, then eyed Nick and Sophia behind me. “So I see.” Father didn’t drop his eye line from Nick and Sophia. “Nick is in line to be beta.” King Griffin voiced. My father crossed his hands in his lap before answering; “Correct.”
“Well you can see what situation we are faced with then.” King Griffin stated; sharing unvoiced words through eye contact with my father as he let out a low sigh, turning his glance to me. What situation?
I noticed out of the correct of my eye Nick wrap his arm around Sophia’s back protectively; as if he was scared she would suddenly be taken away from him, my heartache tightened.
I see no situation or reason for them to be in my father’s and my study at this time of night; letting my shield down, I needed to connect with my father. “Please father, make them leave?” I pleaded telepathically.
My father brought his eyes back to mine and again a smile of pity appeared; “Princess Sophia has mated with a Beta.”Not using Nick’s name out of respect for me, nodding my head to continue. Not caring that our unwanted visitors would notice our private conversation.
“She is of royal blood. He cannot leave our pack nor can she leaves her pack as she is of royal blood.” My father finally pointed out.
Oh.
Realization of their situation occurred; though this situation would not be present when Prince Connor and I mate, the packs would join.
Then another thought occurred, Sophia would not be able to tell Nick this; due to the royal secret not being able to be shared to anyone that wasn’t of royal blood.
Which means she wouldn’t be able to reassure him they would indeed be together, but if she could not reassure him; Nick would think she rejected him. “Oh.” I glanced over my shoulder and noticed Prince Connor staring at me intently.
We were their solution.
If we told Nick that we were mates, Nick would have reassurance and Sophia could be with her love. Leaning back in my chair, another complication had been thrown into my life.
If we told Nick, Connor and I would indeed have to tell both packs.
But the most awful result from us sharing this secret would be that Connor and I would have to act like a mated couple; wonderful.
I let out a low sigh and stared at my father; “What do I do?”
“I have asked enough of you already my dear, I will not ask anymore of you.” I already knew what I had to do; my heart ached as I turned in my seat to face Nick and Sophia.
Nick’s face softened as we shared a quick glance, my heart throbbed. But I had to do this for him.
I put my love for my best friend above my own needs; a soft smile appeared on my lips as I stared at Nick. Nick opened his mouth and took a small step towards me.
I raised my hands to stop him and rose from my chair; King Griffin moved to the side, leaving a clear path between myself and Nick. “I am so happy for you.” Taking a few steps towards him, disbelief appeared across his facial features.
“I am happy for both of you.” I added, sending a soft smile to Sophia, how it pained me to do so. I watched Nick pull Sophia closer to his side and send her a warm smile.
Sadness rolled through my veins but I kept a soft smile on my face, I just had to keep hiding it; I closed my eyes tightly to calm myself. Then I cleared my throat and opened my eyes to watch Nick bring his back to mine.
His amazing blue eyes stared into mine, just looking into them calmed my body; I started to relax.
Smiling a full smile; “I have something to tell you.” Nick arched an eye brow and watched me carefully, clearly wondering why I would be happy. I watched his crystal blue eyes stare into mine, questions could be seen in them.
His eyes threw me.
Those crystal blue eyes.
I couldn’t say it.
The words wouldn’t form.
I stood frozen.
“Focus my sweet.” My father’s voice said softly in my mind.
His words unfroze me and I remembered what I had to do; I let my eyes wander back to Connor’s and hoped that he would understand my reasons for doing this.
Quickly I took a few steps and wrapped my arms behind Prince Connors back, I felt his body stiffen in surprise and then softened; his arms wrapped around my waist and pulled me closed to his chest.
I turned my head to the side to face Nick, shock filled his features; “I found my mate.” A few moments passed as he began to take in the information.
I felt Connor’s hand rest on the small of my back; at least he hadn’t jumped away. Nick began to smile and quickly pulled Sophia in to an embrace leaving a soft kiss on her lips; my heart sunk just a little bit more.
Nick directed his full attention back to me, still having Sophia wrapped in his arms; his crystal blue eyes sparkled with happiness. “I am so happy for you Isabella.”
I smiled softly in Connors arms.
“My new sister.”
Those three words took a hammer to my heart, as they left Nick’s lips; I felt Connor’s press me tighter into him. I turned my face into his chest and took reassurance in his arms; I was so grateful to have him there to support me; as my body soaked in sadness and heart break.
Connor was supporting my full body weight now. I melted in his arms.
“Oh Isabella...” my father’s voice broke in my mind full of pity. He was feeling my pain; I quickly pulled my shield back up. My family did not need to share this pain.
“It’s late and Isabella should rest.” Prince Connor shifted slightly, my body moving with his. I felt his chest rise as he spoke and his heart beat was calming my own. “Come.”
I didn’t glance to look at Nick and Sophia; I couldn’t torture myself anymore.
Connor guided us through the empty halls; his arm was still wrapped around my waist, firmly supporting me. I tried to calm my heart ache, but my mind was consumed with sadness.
Nick wasn’t my mate, so why did my heart ache at the loss as if he was?
Prince Connor slowly twisted my door knob, revealing my empty cold room. Connor’s arm was still wrapped around my waist, as we stepped into my room. It was in that moment that I realized that this was the first time I had been alone with Prince Connor.
I turned in Connor’s arms and rested my face on his chest, both his arms wrapped around me, pulling me closer. “Thank you.”
“For what?” I whispered quietly. Connor shifted sightly as he felt my eyes on his; “Letting my sister be happy.”
Silence fell between us within the darkness of my room. Connor began to trace small circles on the small of my back, my singlet had rolled up and his warm fingers were smoothing on my skin.
I pulled my face away from his chest, taking a step back; my movement caused Connor to let his arms drop back to his side. I couldn’t pull my face up to meet his so I eyed the carpet; “I am sorry to throw you into this so quickly.”
“You weren’t given much of a choice.”
“We are officially mated in our pack’s eyes,” I whispered; now beginning to understand what my actions have caused.
“Does that bother you?” he asked; his question taking me by surprise and I whipped my face up to look into his, pushing my soft blonde hair to the side. Did it bother me to be viewed as Connor’s mate?
“I don’t know anymore,” I whispered walking towards my bed; I flopped onto it sighing. “I suppose it was bound to happen. I just wish that we actually belonged together.”
I felt the bed sink in next to me as Connor sat down. I sat up on my elbows and noticed the stiffness in his back as he hunched over, his face in his hands. He was clearly thinking about the situation we were both in.
I felt a little guilty I had just told him I didn’t want him, though it was true we didn’t belong together. Pulling my legs up on the bed; I positioned myself behind Connor’s back; I slowly placed my hands on his shoulders and began to massage them, letting the feeling of calmness flow from my fingers.
I felt his body soften at my touch, the open curtains let the moonlight shine through the room.
“How do you do that?” Connor softly asked; relaxation clear in his tone.
“It’s my skill.” I replied softly; letting my fingers trace down his back.
“Do you think we will work?” He asked; my mind reran the question a few times before I could answer.
“Time will tell I suppose.”
His hand reached out and stopped mine on his shoulder, his face twisted around to look into my eyes. His haunting black eyes, made my heart flutter. “I think we will work.” His warm breath swirled across my neck.
Not being able to respond I pulled my hand from his and let my body fall back into my bed. My pillow moulded around my head; closing my eyes, I tried to take in everything that happened tonight.
Connor got up from the bed and walked towards my door; “Thanks for tonight Prince Connor. Really...”
He turned his face me and ran his fingers through his black hair, his eyes flicked to my night stand before he nodded his head as he left the room closing the door quietly behind him. I turned to my night stand to see what interested him.
The moon light was dancing shadows across the picture of Nick and myself, my eyes began to drip tears. It was hard to believe that in only one night I had lost my boyfriend, gained a brother in law and had announced Connor and myself as mates.
Tears of sadness, anger and disappointment continued to drip from my eyes.
I threw myself from my bed and grabbed the picture frame. I stormed to my balcony, sliding the door open forcefully. The night air was chilling as I breathed it in, coating the lining of my lungs with ice. I stood at the edge of my balcony, leaning over the rails.
I pulled my hand back and threw the frame with as much force as possible.
Letting it hurtle through the night air.
I would no longer let sadness swallow me; it was time to stop fighting my duties; and start fulfilling my commitments.
Starting with, playing the role as Connor’s mate.
I let my head fall back and took in a sharp breath of cold.
I am Princess Blackmore, pure royal blood.
I would not cry anymore over things I could not change.
Chapter 4
Pacing in my bedroom, I couldn’t decide on what to wear.
Usually I wouldn’t even give it a second thought.
But today was different. Today I would be seen as Connor’s mate.
His packs future queen, my packs future queen.
My fingers ran over the outfits on my bed.
Each outfit didn’t seem right.
My hands went back to the white summer dress which was now hidden under mountains of other clothes.
I pulled it out again and gave it a questioning glance.
My eyes drifted to the clock, if I didn’t hurry up breakfast would be over.
I sighed and began to pull the dress over my head.
*
As I walked up the large hallway, the first thing I noticed was that the dining room doors were closed.
My eye brows furrowed.
Why would my father have the doors closed?
I nodded my head to the door man, and he quickly opened the door revealing my father and mother sitting at the table with The Griffins and Nick.
I tried to ignore the nagging sadness within my heart when I saw Nick.
I ran my hands down the white halter summer dress that stopped a few inches above my knees and walked confidently to my father’s side.
I glanced at Nick as a servant pulled my chair out.
His eyes shone with questions, and they seemed to pull me in.
He broke his eye contact with me and turned his stare at Connor.
Looking between both of us.
I gulped as I realized my mistake. I should have of sat in the empty chair next to Connor, not across from him next to my father.
Surely this meant nothing.
It was just breakfast.
But then I noticed how Sophia had her fingers in laced with Nicks and I took in there closeness.
“Nick, Sophia if you could please give us a minute.” My father asked.
I whipped my head to my father, my eye brows furrowed again.
But I didn’t question his command; instead I turned my attention to the plate of pancakes which had just been placed in front of me.
When Nick and Sophia had left and the doors closed behind them, my father continued.
“Isabella, King Griffin and I have both spoken and decided that it would be best if yours and Connors relationship remained hidden for the time being.” He spoke.
My eyes darted to Prince Connors, as he sat across from me with his arms crossed and his eyes on the table.
I felt a dull pull towards him.
His black hair fell across his face and he seemed to have an unreadable expression on his face.
“Why?” I questioned.
Not pulling my eyes from Connor, hoping he would meet mine.
“Your mating is yet to be official; we do not want to place insecurities within both packs.” He answered.
I nodded my head.
“No need to cause unneeded stress I suppose.” I replied coolly, still waiting for Connor to pull his head up.
For some reason I needed to know if he thought this was a good idea.
“What about Nick?” I suddenly remembered.
“He has been put on a royal gag, until this is all sorted,” my father answered.
“Though he may have some questions for you,” my father pointed out.
Why wouldn’t Connor look up?
I silently begged him to face me.
Finally in defeat I let my glaze fall.
“So we stick to the original plan?” I softly asked.
Placing my fork in my pancakes but no longer feeling hungry.
For some unknown reason I felt disappointed.
“Yes, it’s for the best,” King Griffin spoke.
I nodded my head and silently laughed at myself for my earlier concern of what to wear to this breakfast.
It hadn’t mattered.
“Are you not hungry my sweet?” My mother asked from the top of the table. I didn’t pull my eyes away from my food.
“I am not feeling well.” I lied.
I pushed the plate away, my head down.
I shot a quick glance from under my blonde hair at Prince Connor. And he remained the same he was before.
I sighed softly.
Why did I even need to know what he thought?
I think we would be good together, his words echoed in my head.
Did he mean them, or was it simply a line to try and bring me comfort?
My thoughts were interrupted when the large oak doors opened and my brother and his friend Chase walked in, both laughing.
Their laughter slowly died as they noticed the silence of the room.
Liam shot me a quick glance.
Chase on the other hand, looked so thrilled to see me.
“Isabella, what’s wrong?” He asked with a smile.
What did he mean what’s wrong?
“Was that meant as a greeting?” I asked him, turning myself in the chair to watch as he approached.
Liam went to sit on the other side of the table with the Griffins, but then decided to rethink his choice as Chase made a bee line for the empty seat next to me.
Chase rolled his eyes.
“Hello Isabella.” He teased.
“Better?” He asked as he leaned down and planted a soft kiss on my cheek.
A small smile appeared on my lips.
Chase was always a sweetheart.
“Better,” I repeated.
He sat in the chair next to me, acknowledging my father and then returning his attention back to me.
“So back to my original question... What’s wrong?” He asked boldly.
“What do you mean?” I asked annoyed; nothing was wrong I was fine.
“You look extremely pale.” He stated.
“Don’t you think Liam?” He asked my brother.
Liam didn’t look up from the plate in front of him.
“Suppose,” he answered coldly.
“Almost sickly pale,” Chase continued.
“Thanks.” I said annoyed.
“So what’s up?” He asked and grabbed a bread roll from the centre of the table.
“Not feeling well. Nothing serious.” I lied again.
Was I really pale? Did I look sickly?
Is that why Connor wouldn’t look at me?
“You’re sounding depressed.” He announced.
I shot him an annoyed glare.
Chase was always so bold.
“Done picking on me yet?” I asked clearly annoyed.
He let a soft chuckle out. Then reaching for my hand, laced his fingers with mine.
“Come on Isabella. We both know you need cheering up,” he said confidently.
“In fact, Liam and I were planning on going in to town. You should come. I will even personally ride on the elevator with you as many times as you would like.” He offered.
I
didn’t have a chance to speak before Liam spoke.
“She can’t.”
Liam replied for me; clearly wanting me to get the hint.
Chase turned to look at my brother.
“Why?” He questioned him.
“Because I don’t want her too...” He spoke coldly.
I flinched at his tone.
I had never heard him speak so coldly towards me.
I felt Chase beginning to rub slow circles on my hand with his thumb.
Obviously he noticed my flinch. I went to pull my hand away, but he held on to it tighter.
“Fine you’re not invited anymore,” he informed Liam.
Liam let out an angry low grunt.
“You’re my best mate!” He pointed out.
Liam was right, Chase was his friend.
“Nah mate. My best mate wouldn’t have spoken to his sister in that tone.” He argued.
Liam chucked his fork across the table and crossed his arms.
“Anyway, we all know I am the only one who can cheer Isabella up. Even Nick doesn’t have my skill. Speaking of Nick where is he?” He asked turning to change the conversation.
I let out a low sigh, as a dull ache began to make a reappearance in my heart at the mention of Nick’s name.
Liam let out a dark chuckle.
“He found his mate.” He replied, drawing out the word mate, with a pointed tone.
Clearly trying to make a reference to my situation with Connor.
“What... Who?” Chase asked confused.
“Princess Sophia.” Liam replied smoothly.
The dull ache was now more like a stabbing.
Was he trying to hurt me?
“They belong together. Real sweet couple.” Liam continued.
That answered my question. He was indeed trying to hurt me.
“Oh Isabella I am…” Chase began but was cut off by Liam.
“Why be sorry Chase? She never deserved him anyway.” Liam said darkly.
I
closed my eyes, fighting back the tears.
“What the hell is
wrong with you Liam?” Chase argued.
“I am just pointing out facts.” He argued back.
“She doesn’t deserve anyone,” he added.
He was right I didn’t. I was going against Natures Will. I was rejecting my mate.
“You should think before you speak.” Chase pointed out coldly.
I opened my eyes and let my gaze turn to Connor.
His eyes were dark and narrowed; glaring at my brother.
My heart skipped a beat, he looked murderous.
He eyes darted to mine and Chases’ hands and his jaw clenched before he returned his murderously glare back to Liam.
Liam let out an annoyed grunt.
I missed my brother. And after what I just heard I doubted I would ever get him back.
“I’ve got to go...” I spoke softly and went to stand.
I went to pull my hand out of Chases but he did the unexpected.
His rose from his chair with me and clenched my hand.
“Where are you going?” Liam asked angrily towards his friend.
“Until you apologize to Isabella, I won’t be seen near you.” Chase said sternly.
“Chase its fine,” I finally said; trying to defuse their argument.
“No it’s not fine Is.” He spoke to me not taking his glare away from Liam.
“Can you hear yourself?” Liam sneered.
“She doesn’t deserve your respect or your commitment!” Liam roared.
I noticed Connor stand out of the corner of my eye, I whipped my head around to see him clenching the table firmly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was imprinting finger marks into the table.
His eyes were narrow and black; I could say I had never seen him angry before.
He didn’t seem to be keeping control over his anger either.
I felt a nagging headache and I knew one of my family members were trying to speak to me telepathically. I let my walls drop.
“See what you have caused?” Liam roared in my mind.
“Do you see this Isabella!” He continued the anger in his voice sending shivers down my spine.
I felt my face pale.
“Stop.” I spoke softly.
But his anger was consuming me.
“Liam!” My father roared out loud from the head of the table, finally trying to take control of the situation.
Liam’s eyes bored into mine; locking my eyes within his glare, clear with hatred.
His anger was making me weak, I felt my heart slowing.
“STOP THIS LIAM!” My father roared.
But he didn’t stop. His eyes darkened.
My breathing was slowing, and coming out sharper.
I felt myself drowning in the anger; slowly dying in its arms.
“What are you doing to her!” Chase roared clearly worried; as my grip in his hand weakened.
“Liam you are hurting her!” My father yelled.
As soon as the words left his mouth; Connor lunged from across the table.
Taking Liam by the collar, they crashed down to ground breaking mine and Liam’s eye contact.
But it was too late. I felt myself falling into the grip of darkness.
Chapter 5
Warm arms engulfed me before my body crashed onto the cold wooden floor.
The weakness that over took me was unexplainable.
My arm laid limp at my side, the warm muscular arms holding all my weight.
“You drained her!” I heard my father roar at the top of his voice.
“Albert, Albert! What should we do!” I heard my mother exclaim to my father.
“You cold hearted bastard!” I heard Prince Connor say in disgust, followed by the sound of a fist connecting with flesh, and the cracking of bones.
I felt the person carrying me shift my weight, as they softly brushed a curl of hair from my face.
“Should we call a doctor?” I heard Chase ask. I felt his chest rise as he spoke.
