Kristin fumbled with her iPhone in her lap as her Escalade drifted into the right lane.

“Fuck,” she hissed to herself, swerving back to the left. She turned her attention back to her phone and attempted to read Missy’s text without killing anyone on the road. Fortunately, this stretch of highway usually didn’t have much traffic after around 8 p.m.

She was probably going to be at least fifteen minutes late. It was impossible to put the kids down to bed in under an hour, and she could always count on them to be especially difficult on the one night a month when she got to meet up with her girlfriends. Thank god for her husband, who had insisted that she get out of the house and have some fun more often. Without him, she’d probably be resigned to tending her screaming toddlers in a pair of stained sweatpants with her hair in a messy pony tail for the next twenty years.

As it was, she was looking cute. She had on a tight black T-shirt, a pair of cutoff jean shorts, and three-inch high espadrille wedges. She was only going to meet her friends at Robyn’s place, where they’d mix cocktails and gossip, but she had fun dressing up. It made her feel like her kids hadn’t completely obliterated her personal identity. It also turned her husband on, which wasn’t so easy these days.
