John and Elisa stood in the parlor, waiting for Lawrence’s carriage.
“Aren’t you excited to have your friend back?” Elisa said, peering out the thin windows by the door. Three carriages had come by this afternoon, and three times she had pressed her nose to the window to see if it was Lawrence’s. Anymore and she’d have to clean the smudged windows.
“Aren’t you excited to have your love back?” John teased. Elisa shushed him as her mother walked into the room, passing through to get tea ready.
“You can’t let mother know,” she whispered. “After all, we aren’t engaged.” By her smiling, John could tell that she expected the proposal soon. If Lawrence waited long enough, he wouldn’t be surprised if she went down on one knee to him!
“Well, if Lawrence gets his head on straight, we can announce both engagements together this week-end.” John obviously had thought this through. “Sophie’s ship comes in a day, good roads and god willing she’ll be here by then.”
Elisa beamed at her future brother-in-law. She would be proud to have him as family. Although she had not cared for him at first, time together had strengthened their bond through her sister. She had come to think of him as a good friend and a caring man. And she could not wait for him to become her brother.

Lawrence arrived off of the ship late, having had his medical equipment inspected by customs for far longer than he would have wished. They had berated him about the live specimens he carried in his briefcase, and finally Lawrence had been forced to leave all of his sea slugs behind. Irritated at the delay in his research that such a setback would cause, he was in no good mood as he stepped out of the customs office. The sun was setting and he still had miles of a carriage ride ahead of him. Anxiously, he looked at his watch. He could not wait to be back with Elisa.
Elisa! Her face came to mind, and he sighed in contemplation of her fair skin and dark hair, her blue blue eyes. Such a specimen the like of which he had never dreamt. He had been forced to leave her company to work on sea slug medical research – the idea! – and had spent his time dreaming often of her.
He threw his bags into the waiting carriage. There were two old women riding with him—Mrs. Dawes and Mrs. Tillick, he had met them once before—and they looked sour to be kept waiting for him.
“My pardons, dear Mrs. Dawes, Mrs. Tillick,” he said, bowing before taking his seat. The driver snapped the reins and the horses jumped into motion, rocking the carriage and nearly throwing him over the side.
“Good doctor, how have you been?” Mrs. Dawes patted her neatly curled white hair, adjusting her hat.
“Very well, thanks. Studying Portuguese sea slugs.” He smiled broadly at them as they wrinkled their noses in disgust at the thought.
“You were gone quite a few months, Doctor Russell,” Mrs. Tillick said, in a sly voice.
“Yes, well, the research kept me on a bit longer than I’d have liked.”
Mrs. Tillick leaned back in her chair, pretending nonchalance. “It would seem that the young lady you kept waiting has become impatient.” She gave a small smirk.
Lawrence’s brow furrowed. “Elisa?” She had not left, had she?
“Ah yes, the lovely Elisa Varr. That captain friend of yours has been keeping close company with her for some days now ever since her sister left for school.”
