The car’s headlights lit the narrow road that curved into the darkness. Sometimes trees and brush lined the sides of the road. There was almost no traffic. Around each bend were houses with yard lights; some houses way back in the trees, some at the end of a short driveway. Next to most driveways was a mailbox with numbers on it.
Al was driving and would turn his head and stare at the numbers they went past. He kept shaking his head, no.
Mike was along because Frankie said he owed him. Still, he didn't owe him anything like this. What was he doing here?
"Stop worrying," Al said all confidence now.
Mike didn't answer. Talking to Al was a waste of time. Mike looked at the nice houses going by and wondered if families were sitting down to dinner or maybe gathered around a TV.
They passed a mailbox with the number 323 and Al said, "This is it."
"You sure?" Mike said, suddenly feeling out of breath.
"Stop worrying; you're giving me the creeps."
