It was late Friday afternoon as Rob Stuart, the 49 year old senior executive of a small engineering firm made his way home from work. The working week was over and Rob looked forward to spending the weekend with his daughter Megan. Recently separated, Rob was living on his own and was eager to spend as much quality time with her as possible. Finding time to spend with Megan was difficult as Rob was always busy with work, therefore he usually only saw her every other weekend. For this reason, he always planned something special. This night he had planned for them to go to a football game. Rob was hesitant, however, as to whether Megan would like to come along to a football game with him, as being a real girly-girl he presumed she would much prefer a shopping spree. Rob often found it difficult to find common interests for them both to enjoy. Megan had however assured her father that she would like to come along. Rob hastily made his way home as he had to pick up his daughter from his ex-wife’s house. Calling over to his ex-partners house had become a challenge in itself, as the relationship between Rob and his former wife Michelle was icy at the best of times.
At 5.30, Rob arrived at the house to pick up Megan. A brisk knock on the door was answered by Michelle. The usual small talk ensued over a coffee in the kitchen. Rob was trying to make an effort to be as friendly as possible with Michelle but it was a difficult task. ''Where's Megan?'', Rob enquired. A hand gesture by Michelle directed him to the sitting room. Lounging in front of the television was Megan and her friend Naomi. ''Hey dad'', Megan said while not interrupting her gaze at the latest installment of Gossip Girls. ''Hi Rob, how are you?'', Naomi asked with a glowing smile. Rob sat on the couch beside the two teenagers and began some chit-chat. After humorously grilling his daughter as to her obsession with as Rob described it 'mindless drivel' television shows, much to the amusement of her friend, Rob was ready to depart hopefully with his daughter obliging. After detaching her attention from the television Megan informed her father that she couldn't come with him to the football game tonight. Rob felt whole-hearted disappointment. Instead, she was planning on attending a friend’s birthday party in town. Rob felt let down by her as she assured him all week that she would come, yet she received an invitation to the birthday party of this girl who was very popular at the college. Rob appreciated that she was eager to go and break into this group so he didn't mind too much. Appreciating her father’s disappointment and the cost of the tickets, Megan made a suggestion - ''Naomi could go with you dad''. Rob presumed Naomi would also be going to the party, however it emerged that only a select few from the year were invited and Naomi's name was not favoured on the guest list. Both Rob and Naomi were both hesitant and both of them looked a bit flushed. ''Well, sure I guess... eh would you like to come with me to the game Naomi?'' - After swift encouragement from her close companion, Naomi obliged. It would have been a shame to waste the ticket, Rob conceded. After some more chat Rob got ready to leave as the game would begin at 7 and he planned on beating the traffic. So after giving his daughter a peck on the cheek and an embracing hug he left the house with Naomi instead of his daughter.
