Tobias threw the pitchfork down into the hay below.

It was hot as hell in the barn loft. Hot as heck, his inner voice chided. Ma wouldn't like it if she knew he was cussing, even if he didn't say the words aloud. Still, the beads of sweat were running one after the other down his back. The waistband of his jeans was soaked. He hadn't bothered with a shirt.

He climbed down out of the loft to get himself a drink of water. It was coldest right from the well. Their icebox barely had any ice left, and the ice man hadn't been by in weeks. Don't matter much, he thought, hardly any food in there anyway.

The well was right between the barn and the farmhouse. Tobias kept his eye on the pump, willing himself not to look at the rickety old produce stand by their lane. It was almost empty; the drought had taken most of their crops, and they had had to feed the pigs on some of the rest.

His Ma's voice ran through his head. “I just don't know, Toby,” she'd said. She had been shelling peas, and they plinked down into the bowl in her lap like raindrops. “Iffn we don't get some rain, we're going to be in a heap of trouble.” Her hands were dry and her face was bony. Tobias hadn't liked the tired look on her face.

Tobias's brothers and sisters were all younger than him, and he hated not being able to take care of his family like a man should. He was, after all, almost twenty now.

He was spending more and more time in the fields these days, trying to coax the tiniest bit of life out of the dusty soil. If Daddy was here, he'd know how to get these old lands to spunk up, he thought. But Daddy was gone, had died of a fit in the very fields he worked every day. Now it was Tobias's job to mend the family farm.

The water from the well's tin cup was fresh and cool. He drank deeply, then refilled the cup and splashed it down over his head. The tiny beads of water shone on his tanned skin and warmed instantly in the sun.

He heard the crunch of gravel behind him and turned to see a gleaming convertible coming up their lane. The sun glared off the windshield, blinding him for a moment, then he saw a long sleek car. He sucked in a breath appreciatively; that was one sexy automobile.

It sputtered its way halfway up the lane, then died.

A tall man climbed out of the front seat and shut the door gently. Tobias made his way over to the stranger.

Little help?”

The man's voice was smooth and deep. As Tobias got closer he could see the loosened tie, thick hair sprouting up above it. He was a man's man, all right, and suddenly Tobias was struck with the urge to impress him.

The white smoke puffing up from under the hood was a dead giveaway. “You're hot,” Tobias told the stranger, jerking his chin at the car.

A sly smile spread across the other man's face. “Thank you.”

Tobias thought for a moment, and still came up blank. Why was the man thankful for a broken-down car?

The stranger held out his hand. “My name's Raymond. Mind if I sit here a while? I've been worried that old beast was going to fall apart in the road.” He eyed Tobias up and down. “I'm so glad I made it here.” There was something about him. He was wolfish. There was something else, too, but Tobias couldn't quite put his finger on it.

Sure, I bet Ma will make us some iced tea iffn I ask her.” Tobias turned toward the house, but Raymond put a hand on his shoulder.

No, no need. I just need to get out of the sun a little while. That your barn?”

Tobias started to explain, that it was really his father's, not his, but nodded instead. This Raymond fella had quite a stare. He looked...hungry.

The man was already in the cool shadows of the wooden building. There had been horses, back when the farm was producing, but now the barn only stored hay and some tools.

It's much hotter inside,” Tobias called.

Raymond only nodded and kept walking.

This fella's mighty strange.

Inside the barn, the sunlight crept in through the cracks. It was warm, all right, but it smelled pleasantly of clean hay and well-greased tools.

Raymond sat down on a hay bale and patted the spot beside him. Tobias joined him; Ma wouldn't like if he offended a stranger, no matter how peculiar.

No sooner had he sat than Raymond's thick fingers were on his thigh.

Tobias froze a second, not sure at all what to do. Maybe he's from a foreign land, where this is a greeting.

Still, it felt funny. At first. Then, as Raymond's fingers kneaded their way up his leg, he felt a strange stirring in his jeans.

Up close, Raymond's eyes were a deep amber, with flecks of brown. Tobias had never seen something like that before. He couldn't look away. Those honeyed globes stared right back, then grew larger as they got closer.

Suddenly, Raymond's lips were on his. Tobias had never been kissed, not for real, and he lost himself in the feeling of warm soft lips and a darting tongue. The stirring in his pants became a stiffening as he leaned into the kiss.

Wait!

He pulled back and shoved Raymond away. “What in tarnation...?”

Raymond looked wounded. “But I thought—you acted like—“

Like what? Huh?” He balled up his fists, ready to take the other man on. He didn't know what had just happened, exactly, between them but he knew it was bad.

Raymond's voice was barely audible. “Have you never kissed a man before?”

No! No, of course not. I ain't ever kissed anyone before.”

That slow smile crept its way back onto Raymond's mouth.

I can show you.”

Tobias looked over his shoulder at the farmhouse. Ma would be inside awhile getting dinner ready.

But...with a MAN?

When he turned back Raymond held a roll of bills in his hand. “Look, kid. I'm gonna lay this out for you. I don't mind paying; it's hard to find other...people like me.”

Tobias thought for a minute. We really could use the money. The bills lay on Raymond's palm. There were a lot of them.

He would never, ever tell Ma where it had come from.

He nodded, then closed his eyes.

The other man's mouth was on his in an instant. His tongue was digging between Tobias's lips. Tobias parted them just a little and the tongue was inside his mouth. It found his, and the contact made Tobias's dick stiffen. He felt the other man's hand rubbing its way up his thigh. It found his shaft and squeezed it through the denim of his jeans.

A soft moan escaped Tobias, and he kissed Raymond hungrily. His hand found Raymond's cheek, and the sharp stubble against the soft skin thrilled him.

There was a tugging at Tobias's jeans as Raymond fumbled with the copper button there. Tobias started to help but Raymond's hand pushed him away. It undid the button and Tobias's cock sprung free.

Their kiss broke and Tobias looked down in wonder as Raymond's hand circled his shaft. It started pumping slowly up and down, occasionally encircling his throbbing pink head. Tobias never even touched himself, not really, and the feel of the other man's smooth hand against his softest skin made him want to explode.
