Dirk had been working for the same construction company for eight months. He was always the first one to show up in the morning and often the last to leave, but for some reason, he never could manage to get the foreman’s attention. To move up in the company, he needed to get this guy’s attention, of course, and so every day, he worked harder and stayed later hoping that eventually, it would pay off. Getting a raise wasn’t the only reason he wanted to catch Ben’s attention though. Dirk had gotten a divorce three years ago. His ex-wife was fit, beautiful and a complete hornball, but he always had these urges that she never satisfied.

The tall, chocolate-brown construction worker had never been with another man. He never even daydreamed about it, really, until he first met Ben, the foreman. Every so often, he caught himself looking at the other workers’ arms when they’d hammer away at something or watch the bulges of their backs when they’d squeeze rebar together. He always thought that it was just curiosity though. He liked bodybuilding too, but that didn’t make him gay, right? Not that he was offended at the idea, nothing of the sort. He was as open-minded as they come. Maybe it was just because he’d never had the chance. Anyway, recently he had started to pay special attention to Ben. At first he thought the only reason he wanted Ben’s attention was because he wanted a raise, a promotion. As time wore on, he realized that there was much more to it than that.

Ben was similar to Dirk in a lot of ways. They were both tall, and in good shape. Neither was hugely muscled, but both were firm-bodied and strong. Ben had fuller lips and slightly darker skin. These two things matched up with his beautiful white teeth always caught Dirk’s attention when the foreman laughed, which he did often. Before he knew it, Dirk was spending a good portion of his work hours scanning the site for Ben, and then he’d watch whatever it was Ben was doing with great interest, trying his best to seem like he wasn’t just staring at another man’s ass.

One morning, Dirk arrived to the site very early as always – just as the sun was coming up over the horizon. The rest of the crew never showed up before half past seven, sometimes as late as eight o’clock. He usually had a half hour or so to drink a cup of coffee, and look over the newspaper before he checked out the job plan for the day and figured out what his small crew would be doing. While he sat, sipping his coffee on the third floor of the office he was occupied with building, he heard a truck turn off the main road and rumble down the short dirt path to the site. His thoughts turned to the truck, and he wondered who it was. He walked to the edge of the open floor he was standing on and squinted against the dawn sun, trying to make out who had interrupted his morning ritual.

Much to his surprise, it was Ben.

As the foreman shut off his truck and began to shuffle papers in the cab, Dirk wondered what he was doing here. He was usually one of the last to arrive since he had to stop and pick up supplies or day laborers after leaving the company headquarters. His surprise was tinged by just a little bit of arousal when Ben opened the squeaky pick-up door and hopped onto the dusty ground. He had on a garish plaid shirt as usual, but today, he had the sleeves rolled up so Dirk could see his lean, strong forearms under the cuffs. His rough carpenter cut jeans drooped a little around his thin waist, and when Ben hoisted the toolbox out of the bed of his truck and put it up on a shoulder, his shirt raised just enough that Dirk caught a glimpse of the elastic of his underwear.

Ben must not have noticed him, because he just walked, wordlessly, into the site and dropped the toolbox off with a loud thud. For a moment, Dirk listened to the shuffling of the foreman’s boots on the dirty concrete, but then the sound died away. A bit confused, he decided to just finish his coffee and then go talk to the boss. He sat, looking out into the morning sun, and slurped down the rest of his joe. As he pushed himself to his feet, he was startled when a voice rose up behind him.

“Good morning, Dirk.” Ben called out from the stairwell. “Glad to see you here so early. I heard you normally came out here before everyone else, so I counted on it. There’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”

“Uh... sure, boss. What is it?” Dirk stammered a little, obviously taken aback. “Is something wrong?”

“Well, that depends on how you think about it.” Ben replied, looking a bit flustered himself. “I’m not really sure why I’m telling you this, but lately, I’ve noticed that I keep looking for you during the day. When I see you, I always stare for a while, and watch you work. I spend a few seconds watching your arms hammer, or your shoulders pull. I don’t really know what’s going on with me. I’ve never really felt like this about another man before.”

Ben looked Dirk up and down; he seemed a little nervous, maybe even a little scared about what he’d just admitted. Dirk knew they were the only ones on site, and would be for at least another hour. He crossed the floor to see his boss a little better, and to try and calm him down.

“I... I admit I’ve been doing the same thing. It’s been awhile since I got my divorce, I just figured I was lonely,” Dirk started, “but I think there’s more to it than just being alone and horny. There’s something really special about you. I’ve been thinking about it – and you – a lot lately. I just can’t get you out of my mind.”

“Jesus, you have no idea how glad I am that you just said that. I’ve been beating myself up for days now. Like I said, I’ve never thought about another man like I think about you.” Ben said, visibly relaxing.
