Part Two: The Eternal Question
Part Three: The Final Question
Part One:
A Question of Faith
On a clear, crisp, winter day, a young woman named Heather had decided to take a nice afternoon drive. Stressed about work and everything happening in her life, she often found that a drive was a good way to escape, even if it was only for a while. This drive was desperately needed, for she was feeling particularly depressed today. Her problem wasn’t with the one’s she loved or even the job she had, it was with herself and her faith in God. With things not going the way she had always hoped, she was having serious doubt to his love and even his existence. With her husband gone for the day and all her friends too busy to spend time with her, she knew that a good drive is what she needed to clear her head. Little did she know, a battle more fierce than any in existence was about to begin, and she was the center of it all.
Getting in her car, Heather adjusted her seat to get more comfortable for what she knew would be a nice long drive. As she leaned forward to reach under the seat, a feeling like something’s touching her back causes Heather to jump. Startled, she looks around the car and the surrounding bushes. With nothing there, she passes it off as the stress just getting to her. Shutting the car door, she turns the ignition and backs out of her driveway. Just as she shifts to head down the road, something catches the corner of her eye. Whipping her head around, she scans the back seat for what caused the flash of green that caught her by surprise. I’m losing it, she thinks to herself as she begins down the road.
Rattled by what’s been happening to her, she barely registers the stop sign at the corner. Slamming on her brakes to avoid an accident, she holds her head in her hands.
“I need to calm down!” She says to herself. Making a right turn, she heads away from her street and all the problems she has. Forgetting about the green flash, she focuses her thoughts on how to get through all the issues laid before her in life. Suddenly, a loud thud comes from the side of the car, causing Heather to jump in her seat.
“Geez..” She sighs, “Just what I need, car problems.”
But her mind quickly forgets the thud as she dazes back to her other worries. After a few moments of silence, the thud happens again, this time on the other side.
“What is that?” Heather groans, getting annoyed by the random noises. To her relief, the thud never happens again to distract her. For more than an hour, she drives with no destination or heading in mind. Starting to calm down, she thinks about what’s wrong with her life and why God is to blame.
“I do everything he wants.” She says out loud, “Why does my life still have so much pain and frustration?”
“He doesn’t love you.”
She passes the small voice off as a combination of stress and paranoia.
“I put my life in his hands,” She continues, “Why does he like to torment me?”
“He really hates you.” The small voice whispers into her ear again.
Pulling into a gas station, Heather stops the car and quickly looks around the back seat. She was sure that the little voice was coming from behind her, but the back seat is completely empty.
“I really must be losing it,” She laughs to herself, “I’m hearing voices in my head. Maybe I should just go home and lie down.”
Heading back on the road, she returns to her thoughts about why God is treating her so badly. Thoughts of doubt flow through her like poison in her veins.
“If God existed, why is there so much hate and fear in the world?” She asks herself, “I mean, if he was powerful enough to make the universe, surely he could prevent hatred and lies.”
“There is no God.” The voice whispers again. “I can show you why there isn’t a God. Please, let me show you.”
“Who said that!” Heather screams, slamming on her brakes and almost causing an accident. Before she has a chance to even turn around, a strange golden light pulses from the back seat. In an instant, everything vanishes from outside the car, replaced by a forest older than any she’s ever seen. Quickly getting out of the car, she looks around for any sign of what was speaking to her. As before, the back seat is completely empty and she feels all alone.
The forest that she finds herself in is overrun by vines and brush, which shows no signs of a vehicle going through them. Confused and frightened, she wonders how she could have gone from the city to a remote part of a forest. Plus, she doesn’t want to go back in the car due to the strange golden flash that seems to have brought her here. Feeling completely lost and alone, she looks around at the endless trees surrounding her.
“Hello?” She timidly whispers. “Is there anyone here?”
“Ah yes, lass.” The small voice echoes from behind her, causing Heather to jump. “I was wonderin when you’d be askin to see me! Afterall, I brought you here to see!”
Staring at the car with a mixture of fright and denial, Heather can see a tiny little man dressed all in green. As he bows in greeting, she can see a clover attached to his little green hat.
“Who…Who are you?” Heather asks timidly.
“Farrel, me friends call me!” The little man bows, standing up on her car roof. “How do ya do, my fair lady.”
“Why did you bring me here?” Heather asks, trying to muster all the courage she has. “Why am I in the Woods?”
“Ah, what a good question that is. I brought you here to show you that God doesn’t exist! It’s all just one big joke, and he’s the punch line! He’s a fake, a phony, a fraud, an illusion to make you feel fine!”
“But…But…” Heather stutters, trying to take in what’s happening.
“Now, now, there’s no need to thank me! I’ve known for years that he doesn’t exist. I have the proof, right here in my fist!”
“I don’t know what you mean.” Heather whispers, trying to understand. “Are you saying that God is fake?”
“Right you are, my dear, and I have the proof right here!” Farrel laughs, dancing across the car roof. “He doesn’t exist, that much is true. Please, please, let me show you.”
Frightened, Heather timidly stares at the little man dancing around in front of her. Noticing this, Farrel stops and bows low with a smile. He then jumps up in the air, right at her face. Jumping back, she covers up to protect herself from this little man. For a moment, she stands frozen to the spot, too scared to look.
“It’s okay, I won’t bite!” Farrel laughs, “I didn’t mean to cause a fright! I just needed to stretch my legs out a bit. Please don’t be scared, just come and sit!”
Opening her eyes, she sees the little man floating in mid air. Rubbing her eyes in disbelief, she looks around to see if this is some sort of trick. Smiling broadly, Farrel just waits patiently for her to check around. Convinced that it isn’t a trick, Heather looks at the little man with full attention.
“So you say God doesn’t exist?” She begins, “You actually have proof?”
“Oh yes, yes indeed!” Farrel says gleefully, “He is nothing but a figment used for greed. He has no power, no truth at all. If you believe in him, you’ll just continue to fall!”
