Mr. Brown was an unhappy clown.

His frown was painted on upside down.

His face looked happy but he really was sad.

He was very lonely and always felt bad.

Mr. Brown hadn't always been down in the dumps

but smiling for decades had made him a grump.

The townspeople expected him to perform on command.

After so many years he'd had all he could stand.

Wherever he went, people urged him to play

but he'd just trudge along and say please go away.

He was tired of being a goofy buffoon.

He was a serious artist who worked with balloons.

Since no one would listen and he wouldn't pretend

he decided to go home and create his own friends.

The first friend he made was a purple giraffe.

It turned out so great that the clown almost laughed.

Then a green elephant and a blue kangaroo,

two tangerine cows and white cockatoo

He made whimsical creatures with polka dot feet

and gave striped little monkeys bananas to eat.

His bunnies hopped around in soft pink socks

and his cat had some kittens inside a small box.

Such fun he was having with all his new friends

he couldn't, he wouldn't let all his fun end.

He blew up balloons till his poor cheeks were sore

then twisted and turned till friends spilled out the door.

The townspeople heard all the noise he was making

and started to think Mr. Brown had been faking.

"Ha ha!" and "hee hee!" the clown shouted with glee

as he galloped around on his new spotted pony.

"What joy!" he giggled, "what a hoot!" he cried

as he herded his new flock of geese outside.
