I was in a fix. Boss Hoarden wouldn’t leave me in peace. Even after I got out of his office, his voice stayed with me, grating through that jungle-man beard. “Let one more saccharine granny miss a payment, you’re back on the street with the trash.”

I wouldn’t have sweated so bad ‘cept old Dame Hegarty was due…in fact she was already ten minutes late. Boss Hoarden knew she had the appointment, of course. Probably wished I’d kept her waiting. See her wince as she walked into my cubicle, withered hand gripping her stick so hard you could see the bones. Yeah, he’d have loved that. Especially the bit when I said “no.”

But I was going to say it.

“Mr Jacobs,” she rasped, squinting at me through scratched lenses, “it is so nice to see you again.” It wasn’t, but she had a way of making it sound like more than a polite lie.
