Doe Heart

Abellone Rain

Rend-the-hunter stood at the edge of the forest, her face almost skyward, and breathed in deeply through her nose. There was something about the beginning of a hunt that made everything smell sharper. She heard a pounding of hooves and up galloped a royal guard patrol. They slowed to halt in front of her, kicking up bits of grass and dirt.

The one in front said, “Excuse me, Miss, but this is the king’s personal forest. Civilians are not allowed.”

Rend laughed. “Do I look like a civilian? I’m here for the competition. I’m after the doe that escaped from the king’s garden. You know, hefty reward, title, dead or alive, and all that.”
