Dying for a Picnic
Jason Slate chuckled at the people parading past his window as they melted in the hot summer sun while he enjoyed the air-conditioned environment of the guesthouse. He made sure there was nothing cold to drink outside, no ice anywhere but in the refrigerator beside him, and very little shade nearby. He wanted them to suffer. It was his prerogative, as host of the event, to do whatever he wished. Having twelve million dollars didn’t hurt, either.
As his guests endured the heat, Jason allowed them each an audience in the cool air, albeit a brief one. It was one of the few entertainments he had left, making those around him grovel at his feet. He ticked them off one by one in his mind, delighted with each response he’d gotten. Julia, his sister and hostess of the house, had initially refused to stay out in the heat, but Jason, as always, had won. She was, after all, one of his major heirs, and he made sure she never forgot the carrot dangling from the end of the stick. Chauncey Green, his business partner, would be shocked to learn of the surprise audit going on as the party commenced. The furtive look on his partner’s face told Jason that he’d been right in not trusting the man. And last but not least was Sarah James, his latest in a long line of paramours. He doubted she suspected that her time was nearly up. Jason chuckled when he thought about the crew evicting her from the house even as she swam in the luxurious pool.
