Star Power
I get the oddest fan mail in my job, though none much crazier than the letter I opened from Deloris Van Grafter. Yes, that Deloris Van Grafter, heiress to the VG Mayonnaise fortune. It was rumored that Deloris had given away most of her wealth to oddball causes and obscure charities, but I’d heard that she still held title to a collection of fine artwork, including a Picasso and two Monets.
Why was she sending me fan mail? Well, it wasn’t exactly for me, it was addressed to Trome Jaresse, the pen name that my horoscopes appear under in our local daily newspaper. I’m also Friendly Rita, the Household Tips Lady and Jennifer Anne, the teen advice columnist. Our paper’s too cheap to pick up the nationally syndicated columnists by my better known contemporaries, so I write all three columns, barely getting paid a decent wage for one writer, let alone three.
That’s why I always keep my eyes open for an easy score, some way to pick up a few bucks, tax free, to make my life a little greener.
I got the idea to rob Deloris right after I read her letter. It said,
Dear Trome Jaresse,
I’ve followed your advice religiously for years, and want
you to know what an impact you’ve made on my life. I
don’t do anything without consulting your words first.
You have proven again and again how true your vision is.
