MEMORIES OF LOST VICTORIES

The right hook sent him spinning to the ropes as the world blurred and he made the short trip to the canvas to bounce off the springy material of the ring. He lay there dazed as the world slowly slipped away into a blissful sleep.

That had been Jack a few years back when he had been a prize fighter with a name that got mentioned. Now he was here in this gym training for his next fight.

The room was stuffy and there were sweating men all around him hitting bags or sparing in the big ring in the middle of the room.

The world had changed for him after he lost that match. Suddenly, promoters weren't interested in him and his sponsors quit taking his calls about checks that bounced when they got to the bank. He guessed the money had been the final straw.

He'd left the boxing world behind and now he was what he was: a street fighter. The illegal fights that went on all around the country were a place for men with no other salable skills, but their fists, to make money.

Jack still remembered when Donny had asked him if he was interested in getting back into the ring. That had been three months ago. Now he was set up to fight the guy just under the guy who was the champ - the second fish down the chain as he liked to think of it.

Tomorrow was the big day and he wasn't really ready for it. He pounded the bag for a while alternating combinations and working to incorporate the left hook he had been working on perfecting for the last week or so. Soon he'd do this to the champ's face if he could get through the mass of fighters underneath him. It was a satisfying thought.
