Chapter 1
Ecuador

The emailed invitation was irresistible with it's cryptic message. Considering the source, it could have been a Cyrillic message as well. Humphrey was a diplomat of the USSR before it shattered while he was out of the country. He decided since his country left him, he was in a good position to carve himself a new life. He did.

“Sparrow and Sparrowette,” the invitation started “We are planning an informal (of course) Soirée at my country estate New Petersburgh.” Sally and I laughed over this one, we'd never heard him call his lands in Ecuador by the same name twice. It appears he likes to try novel spellings as well. “Things will become even more informal the next morning. There is a serious intent, many of our friends will be here. Don't RSVP, just bring your smiles. All else we be provided from the time we pick you up at the airport. Stays of over five years duration will need to be approved by the management, Senora Humphrey.”

We email back we'll be driving in. Sally and I had been planning a trip to Cuenca (pronounced Quenka) to try out the new Peruvian Chefs at fancy new restaurants that are so impressing our friends. We've thought of opening a publishing company, PT Pulp, and agree a simple four hundred year old colonial house of many floors and inspiring views would be an appropriate location. The small government of Ecuador is a boon to business, if you're not in a rush and you don't care about formalities like telling the government what you're doing. The sales would all be outside the country, and so untaxed and unregulated by Ecuador. Call us telecommuters. All we require is stable high speed Internet and good food. We will probably employ half a dozen people. This could be fun. That almost hidden line in the invitation about serious intent was unlike Humphrey. We know we will go.

Since the event is several weeks away, and Sally and I have no plans that can't be ignored, we take off immediately. Of course we forget stuff, but that's part of a vacation, and in this case a leisurely second honeymoon. We fall in love all over again; with each other, and with the freedom our expat lifestyle gives us. In my old life I was always wondering about all I had to do, and worrying about what I needed to do next. For three weeks we concentrate on what we want to do right now and do it. There will be plenty of time later to concentrate on what we want to accomplish.
