Alex and the Tomato Plant
Papa, Alex’s Grandpa has a big Garden at his house with flowers, herbs and tomatoes. When Alex came to visit, he liked to help Papa to water the plants and pick out the weeds.

This spring Papa gave Alex his very own tomato plant to take home, so he could water it and watch it grow. Alex had his own small watering can and few small gardening tools. Papa put the tomato plant on Alex’s patio in his backyard by the sliding glass door, so Alex could see it every morning when he looked outside. Then he would remember to water his tomato plant.

Every day Alex watered his plant with his own watering can and watched it grow. One day he noticed little yellow flowers on it, so he called Papa on the phone to tell him. Papa told Alex that was a good sign, because the yellow flowers grow into tomatoes. Alex was happy to hear this news. He continued to water the plant and watch for weeds.
A little while later Alex saw green tomatoes growing on his plant, so he called Papa to let him know. Slowly the tomatoes started to turn red.

One day Alex saw a bright red tomato, so he picked it, washed it and decided to taste it.
Alex said, “Papa, I picked the red tomato, I washed it and I had a bite of it.” Papa, I don’t like tomatoes.”
Papa said, “That’s ok, the important thing is, you did an excellent job looking after the tomato plant, next year you can grow something else.” You can share the tomatoes with your neighbours and friends.”
