Love Story

O N E

Virginia waited excitedly for the elevator door to open. Today was her first day as an associate lawyer at the firm Rippling, Steele, Abs, and Loins. The elevator door opened, and she stepped inside, about to start a new adventure. The mirrored elevator was empty. “Good,” she thought. “I’ll make one last check of my appearance.”

Virginia pushed the button to the eighteenth floor and stared modestly at her reflection. She patted her untameable mass of glorious, thick, molten red-golden hair, and checked her large, green eyes for any specks of sleep. She hiked up her short, red, leather skirt just a little higher and undid the top button of her white, silk blouse. She admired her fashion sense that bordered on pert and perky rather than dowdy and old-fashioned. She hoped her new boss would like her sense of youthful style and note that her red and white ensemble resembled the colours of the Canadian flag. Her outfit emphasized her 5'4 daintily petite, but slightly top-heavy, slender frame.

Virginia knew she would make a good lawyer and hoped she would become an advocate for oppressed women who would consult with her on matters of civil litigation, such as unlawful dismissal for poor fashion sense. She giggled at her silliness. She had excelled at contract disputes in law school and, as an articling student she had learned to recognize bad contracts and bad lovers.

Her career choices had always been good, but her personal choices had been bad. She hoped this new job would mean a new start to her life. She had put that business with stalker Bob behind her and was relieved that Steve was locked up in prison. If only she could meet someone who would bring out her passionate nature in a fun way and not be a raving obsessive-compulsive personality. Since lawyers are obsessed with their cars and hockey teams, and none of them shared her love of wrestling, she knew a lawyer would not make a good boyfriend. She would have to look for love somewhere else.

The elevator doors opened. Virginia was nervous but determined to look outwardly composed. As she stepped into the foyer, her nervousness flared up in her feet, as it always did, and she caught her spike heel on the carpet of the office lobby. Her top-heavy body leaned forward and gravity pulled her down. She fell in an alluring manner, as she always did in these moments, at the feet of a man wearing black, soft kid leather loafers with tassels. Her body fluttered with embarrassment as the man’s lean, muscular hand helped to raise her up. She reached for her briefcase and fell back on the floor. Once again the mysterious stranger helped her to her feet. He lifted her briefcase as she straightened her blouse.
