The Importance of Looking Right by Graham Murray The Importance of Looking Right by Graham Murray June 04, 2011 $0.99 3539 words Sample 30%
Author bio:
I began my writing career quite by accident. Even while still in Grade school, I had an extraordinary knack for turning everyday events into stories, which I did. I was also obsessed with grammar, punctuation and spelling, always wanting to know more and always wanting to get it right. I’m still working on that one. To me, even at that young age, all of life seemed to be a series of stories; some sad, some happy, some tragic, and some . . . well, some were simply unbelievable and beyond words. It was those stories that piqued my interest and the reason why, today, much of my fiction is based around stories that either defy belief, or are so emotionally intense that they are difficult to comprehend and absorb. Unlike most writers, I am sorry to admit that I really do not remember when my first story was published. It must have been the mid 70s and was probably in Reader’s Digest. I do, however, remember the first award I received. I was eight years old, and was awarded a prize at school for Best Creative Writer, whatever that meant. I had written a simple, descriptive piece of prose, one page long about . . . well that story is actually published today and remains a mystery to many who read it as they try to guess what the story is about. It is called “The Return”. If you ever come across it, see if you can determine what the story is about. To date, nobody has ever guessed correctly first time, although one man did get it on his second guess. So, I began collecting my stories, as I used to just throw them away. Before long, I had a backlist as long as your arm and didn’t know what to do with them. I started sending them out to be published, and that’s when the bug really bit down hard and I become a ‘word junkie’. Yes, I admit; I’m a writing addict in a big way. Still, it wasn't all bad as I now make a living through writing, which is quite possibly the best job in the world. I’m no millionaire (almost), or JK, or Stephen King, and I know what an adverb is, but I’m a damn site happier than most folks I see embroiled in the corporate world, who always seem so miserable and are always looking to ‘move on’ or ‘move up’. I left the Joneses and the materialistic world behind years ago and have never looked back. It was a soul-cleansing experience as I now have only what I require, not what I want, because that way lies madness. Every day I see thousands of stories, just waiting to be written and it’s true what they say; that every writer includes a bit of themselves in their stories. I do the same thing, except that I will never reveal which bits are true and which are fiction. That I leave to my readers to decide. My stories are unusual inasmuch as I tend to make every word count, and in many of my tales, there are clues dotted around which, if missed by the reader, can result in them misunderstanding, or missing the point entirely. Readers who skim over paragraphs will most likely miss a great deal of what I write, especially in my short stories, where the ultimate clue can be a single word. While writing, I try to engage the reader as much as possible and then drop the bombshell at the very end; usually in the last paragraph or, sometimes, as the last line. This technique has held me in good stead over the years and I keep doing it. It seems that none of my readers ever tires of waiting to read that final line to find out what really happens. My work may not be to everyone’s liking, buy hey, you can’t win ‘em all. I write for the sheer thrill of it, and dedicate all of my work to my six-year old daughter, who remains my finest achievement and is the inspiration for most of my work. If you’re ever stuck for story ideas, watch a six-year old at play and open your mind. See the world through their eyes and your own world will be opened to possibilities you never imagined possible. If you like my work, tell 40,000 of your closest friends. If you don’t, tell me, and then tell me why. We are all of us merely players in a world gone mad, each of us trying to make our way in a time when the sky is the limit and we are limited only by our imaginations. As I completed my two degrees in medicine, I also write a lot of non-fiction; some of it medical and some of about publishing and the English language. The way I take a break from writing fiction, is to write some non-fiction. Weird, I know, but it works for me. Happy reading . . .

The Inbetweeners:Emily by Julie Grinnell The Inbetweeners:Emily by Julie Grinnell Sep. 26, 2011 $4.99 67533 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
I never thought or prayed to be a business woman, I just am. Through the years I have helped grow other businesses as well as launching my own endeavors that came to fruition. The ability I have, to ‘see’ what is needed to move a company to the next level, whether this is the launch or expansion of the company, is a gift from God. Let me explain... As a young girl growing up in the UK, I remember going to the fish and chip shop in the village we lived in with my dad. The shop had just changed hands and they were changing the name of the business. I liked the old name better and so we talked about it. Dad explained that it was all about identity and what the owner was looking to establish and went on to explain that as words have meanings, even our own names mean something. I was fascinated by what he had to say and thought of the endless possibilities of names for the little, but highly successful, fish ‘n chip shop when it occurred to me that all the shops in the village were very busy yet this did not reflect the local population at the time and I became curious about business development and the success of a company. During my high school years I dreamt of the types of businesses I would be interested in owning and developed as an entrepreneur with my father as my first client. My father worked as a painter and decorator and was made redundant from a long-standing position with a company in the neighboring town. He must have felt desperate; three young children, a wife, house, car, no office skills or qualifications and no money. I remember the day it was announced he’d lost his job, I’d been attending high school for a few months, I’ll never forget his face, but I saw the new circumstances differently to him, I saw it as a way to move forwards rather than a set back and said so. He just shook his head at the prospect of working for himself and sat heavy-hearted at the kitchen table when I announced I had a plan for his business and that it was called a business plan. I explained that the first stages of the plan were to market his services by telling everyone how great a painter and decorator he was. I remember his smile, it was a little wry but more than anything, it was a smile you give a child for being so simple. I then went on to tell him that there was no time like the present and that we should put what we knew about him and the services he had to offer on a piece of paper, which could be typed and pinned to all of the notice boards in the village, and as they say, the rest is history. God Spoke, I Listened Knowing my limitations I stuck to what I knew worked and had no vision or dream to develop or publish a magazine, this all changed when I heard from God. It was at the end of the summer of 1998, I was waiting for a client who was running late when I heard God, He simply said to read a magazine. I immediately thought that there probably wasn’t a title I would be that interested in, but went ahead anyway, after I’d finished turning the last page to the magazine I sat wondering if I’d missed something when God spoke again, what He said changed me and the rest of my life forever. “I want you to develop a magazine for Me.” As soon as He spoke I started to laugh. I wasn’t laughing at Him, but the idea of me writing an article was ridiculous to me, once I’d stopped laughing this is what I said. “God, have You forgotten I’m dyslexic?” His response was direct, “Julie, have you forgotten I am God.” I stopped laughing and that night I wrote my first article. I didn’t bother to re-read it, and soon after shutting the computer down for the evening God prompted me to read what I’d written. I didn’t ask why, I just went back to the computer and did as He requested. No sooner had I read the first sentence when I exclaimed that I was right, I couldn’t do it; the article was a mess …. but He showed me something that I had never seen before, He showed me that I could see what was wrong and because of this, I thought I could edit it. That night I went to bed with hope but before I slept, God had one more thing to do. I didn’t ask for it, I wasn’t thinking about it, but as I sat reading, God touched me and I received healing. I remembered the sensation of light electrical charges running through my head, then as if my brain actually moved. The next time I took a look at that article, I was able to edit it and from that day on, I made plans and gathered information for the magazine that He gave the title, Living Spirit

When I write, it is my intention that the reader can pick up on the puzzles, enjoy the solutions, and get a kick out of realizing how seemingly unconnected events link up. I hope that anyone who reads my work finds it light and relaxing with an occasional chuckle. My favourite authors are Terry Pratchett (I have a signed copy of MORT) and John le Carre. My first favourite novel was an old, old paperback copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula I found tucked away gathering dust on a shelf in the living room. Kind regards and happy reading! Patrick

I am a Writer of many genres just getting into the online world as I have made most of my living off of print copies. I am now attempting to spread by books on the web, a place that has a longer market, as i do not want to quit my career. It's a hard road, but people have always liked my books. Each for every type of person or personality, sometimes targeting all. I also have many different writing styles so I am varied in my works. If a person would not like one style, they would pick another book I wrote that has a style they identify with. i try to be open, try to target as many readers so nobdoy gets left behind.

I only started writing in 1995 in my late 50s (yeah for us late bloomers!). Debbie’s Story - the story of childhood sexual abuse - was a huge hit when published in 1997, one of those books that appeared just at the right time and in the right place. It was second on the bestseller list for that year. We immigrated to New Zealand in 1997 and in 2000 I co-authored a book called A New Life in New Zealand with my good friend Surita Nortjé. That has since become the preferred textbook for potential immigrants to New Zealand. After that there was a lull when I wrote almost exclusively for magazines and newspapers, in particular Connections and Migrant News. In 2006 I published a gift book called To the Child Unborn, a delightful book filled with wisdom and love which, I think, is the best thing I've done. 2007 and 2008 marked the start of my life as a fiction writer. I wrote The Falling of Shadows, The Indigo Kid and Accidental Hero which you can buy through my website, www.jennyharrison.co.nz These were written under my nom de plume Wren Harris. Oh, I forgot to tell you, my real name is Jenny Harrison

aloha, I was born in Providence, Rhode Island but began a life of many moves soon thereafter (3 high schools, 2 junior high schools...even 2 kindergardens). I kept moving in a westerly direction until I reached Hawaii. If I moved any further west it'd be east so I returned to California (& gave up a Hemenway scholarship from UH). Spent too much time in competitive athletic endeavors (I was told I was the only history major at La Crosse State U. I was there to play baseball at a very good phy-ed school). Yes, history was my major but you can do only 2 things with a history degree: teach or write. I wasn't ready to do either so I ended up as a pysch nurse (after doing this and that). My motto: Life is serious but...you cannot take it seriously. I've always been interested in people and the human condition and I have the gift of wonder (ex. if wisdom is important why does our culture - and others - ignore it and not esteem it? Our educational system doesn't even teach it in philosophy classes ['No more Kant and the color red already!]). Hence (or is it ergo?), I've matured enough to devote myself to the scribbling craft.
