I was mostly a tom-boy and spent much of my time climbing trees and playing baseball. Now that my husband is retired, we're back home in Florida near the white surgar-sand beaches and turquoise waters of the Gulf Coast. I love writing books (mostly romances), blogging, painting (landscapes and still-lifes in oils), photography (digital), travel (when I can afford it), going to the beach, getting together with friends and family, and playing with my three young grandkids (full of energy) and two big dogs (Shani and Dude). Disposable People: Inspired by true events by Ezekel Alan Disposable People: Inspired by true events by Ezekel Alan May 25, 2012 $2.99 108423 words Sample 15%
Author bio:
Disposable People was a very difficult story for me to write, and for many reasons. A few readers and reviewers have commented that the novel reads like a memoir, and that the pain and emotions are so palpable that it is hard to regard it as a work of fiction. They are right - much of what is in the story is based on things that happened to me growing up. It took me close to two years to write the book, not because I didn't know the story I wanted to write, but because I wasn't sure I wanted to tell it. If one day you go home from school hungry (again) because you didn't have breakfast or lunch and you ask your mother what's for dinner, and her response is "Shit", this memory will stay with you, but you will always be ashamed to talk about it. I struggled with writing about these things partly because I didn't want to dishonor the memories of all the people I grew up with, many of whom have now died. In the same way, I've seen many dreadful things happen to the poor folks in our neighbourhood - murders, rapes, child abuse, and the brutal beatings and punishments meted out to gays and thieves. Before I could write about these things, I had to think hard about the image people have of Jamaica, and whether if I told the stories about the things I saw, heard, and participated in, people would think that I was unpatriotic or, as we say back home, a "sell-out" (betrayer). I love my country. It is the only place I will call home, and someday I hope to retire there. But the time came when I felt I had to tell this story. It is a work of fiction, but perhaps too much of it is true. I am very surprised and deeply grateful for all the kind reviews and comments I have received so far. It has given me confidence and courage to write my next novel, which is now half-way complete. Ezekel Alan is a Jamaican business consultant working in Asia. He lives with his wife and kids, and has a good reliable dog. "Disposable People" is his debut novel. Ezekel blogs at www.ezekelalan.com.

I write a mix of books: novels, biography, short nonfiction. I set my novels in Toronto, my home for most of my life, a city of contradictions and ripe with conflict possibilities. My debut book, LIFELINER, is set in Ontario, but also travels down to New York and across the pond to Sweden. My life is one big question mark, has been ever since I sustained a closed head injury (or mild traumatic brain injury or concussion, whichever moniker is fashionable) in a four-car collision. But my writing keeps me grounded, my photography takes me to other places. When I'm not writing, reading, taking photographs, I'm hunting for good coffee and sensational chocolate.

Corrine Ann Delvecchio was born in the Motor City on the day the sun left Ophiuchus and entered Sagittarius. Her mother, Teresa, emigrated with family from northern Italy to northern Ontario, Canada when she was just a young girl. Corrine’s father, Alex, is a retired center for the Detroit Red Wings and member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. As a part of that thin band between the Boomers and the Gen Xers, Corrine experiences life between narcissism and altruism, between fear and faith, between you and me, and reasons with words. As a young child, she would ‘talk her sister’s ear off’ evaluating the day’s activities, considering and interpreting before going to sleep. She secretly started writing lyrics and verse as a pre-teen, and in High School, she actually attended her poetry class. Her best recollection is that she did receive an A. ;-) As a young adult, Corrine sold advertising specialties and promotional items for her father’s company. She was married twice and blessed with a son from her first, and returned to school during her second. She holds a Bachelors degree in Business Administration, and until recently, worked for many years in the Automotive Industry, and admits to being a bit of a car-freak. Corrine has a philosophical mind, a poetic heart and a modern-day life. She has an insatiable quest for the Truth, is an avid reader and relishes the time spent studying metaphysics, walking and writing. “Systole,” written at the very beginning of this millennium, is her first collection of poems to be published. Corrine is starting a new life in a new state, and continues to write new poetry.

Having lived in Japan since 1988, Hugh Ashton was surprised recently to receive an e-mail message from an old college friend working in a London bank informing him that a metal deed box which had lain undisturbed in the banks vaults for nearly 100 years was due to be thrown out, since the bank was moving to new premises. Given his knowledge of Hugh's interest in Sherlock Holmes, the friend felt that the deed box, marked clearly on the outside with the name of Dr John Watson, Holmes's friend and biographer, could prove of interest. After various legal battles, Hugh obtained ownership of the box, which was shipped to his home in Kamakura, a little south of Tokyo. On opening the box, Hugh discovered a collection of tales describing the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson which had never previously been published. Three of them are given here, and more are expected as he continues to decipher Dr Watson's almost illegible writing.
